The bottom line in any sports league is scoring more points than your opponents. It is the single most critical factor in evaluating teams. Most of the time, teams which score more points than their opponents on average end up being playoff teams, while those whose opponents score more points miss out. Here are the point differentials for the two conferences, with rankings by total season point differential.
  1. +249 - Ravens - AFC Playoffs 1st seed
  2. +195 - Patriots - AFC Playoffs 3rd seed
  3. +143 - Chiefs - AFC Playoffs 2nd seed
  4. +71 - Titans - AFC Playoffs 6th seed
  5. +55 - Bills - AFC Playoffs 5th seed
  6. -7 - Texans - AFC Playoffs 4th seed
  7. -8 - Chargers
  8. -12 - Colts
  9. -14 - Steelers
  10. -34 - Broncos
  11. -58 - Browns
  12. -83 - Jets
  13. -97 - Jaguars
  14. -106 - Raiders
  15. -141 - Bengals
  16. -188 - Dolphins
The top 6 teams in point differential in the AFC all made the playoffs. Let's see how the NFC stacks up.
  1. +169 49ers - NFC Playoffs 1st seed
  2. +117 Saints - NFC Playoffs 3rd seed
  3. +113 - Cowboys
  4. +104 - Vikings - NFC Playoffs 6th seed
  5. +63 - Packers - NFC Playoffs 2nd seed
  6. +31 - Eagles - NFC Playoffs 4th seed
  7. +30 - Rams
  8. +9 - Buccaneers
  9. +7 - Seahawks - NFC Playoffs 5th seed
  10. -18 - Bears
  11. -18 - Falcons
  12. -81 - Cardinals
  13. -82 - Lions
  14. -110 - Giants
  15. -130 Panthers
  16. -169 - Commanders
The Cowboys and Eagles BOTH under-performed when it came to actually winning games. Both teams should be in the playoffs under normal circumstances. But neither team actually deserves it.
