Tebow is finally changing his mechanics

As Florida coach Urban Meyer takes his much-hyped leave of absence, we hope that Meyer spends some of his down time reflecting on his biggest failure.

Tim Tebow.

After the Gators won two national championships in three seasons with Tebow at quarterback, Meyer owed a huge debt to Tebow. And Meyer should have spent all of 2009 attempting to repay it.

He didn't.

So Tebow left Gainseville with a release slower than Byron Leftwich in a vat of molasses, and overall football mechanics far uglier than Vince Young's Uncle Rico sidearm release.

It's therefore no surprise that Tebow is in the process of changing his throwing motion, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. What's surprising is that few are calling out Meyer for not doing anything and everything he could in 2009 to help make Tebow into a more marketable NFL quarterback.

Since Tebow isn't injured, he's using the belated effort to become a pro-style quarterback as an excuse not to throw at the Scouting Combine. The obvious goal for Tebow is to avoid doing more damage to his draft stock -- the obvious response in light of his Senior Bowl-week performance is whether it's possible for any further damage to be done.

Though Tebow seems to be trying hard not to point a finger at Meyer for the quarterback's current predicament, this quote tells us everything we need to know: "I've never been asked to shorten or quicken my release and not have a loop in it."

As the usually-sunny Joe Theismann said three weeks ago, the situation shows that Meyer and his staff have "no clue" as to the process for preparing a quarterback for the NFL. And while some of the Florida fans in the crowd might respond by saying that Urban Meyer's only duty is to prepare players to play college football, look for Nick Saban and every other coach in the SEC to take a DVD of Tebow's throwing motion into the homes of every high-end quarterback recruit for as long as Meyer remains the Florida coach. They'll all be making the case to the kid and his family that, if he hopes to play in the NFL, he'd better not go to Gainseville.

If you don't think that'll eventually impact the performance of Meyer's team, then you simply don't understand how college football actually works.

Meanwhile, Tebow will be left to his own devices to get an education into how pro football actually works. During his four years with Meyer, Tebow apparently learned absolutely nothing.

This goes to show that UM is the most selfish guy that only cared about winning at UF. Afterall the interviews and what not where UM was so "sad" to lose Tebow and he never once helped the guy out. UF would be lucky to make it to another BCS bowl in the future.

Isn't that what he is supposed to care about?

I think Meyer helped him out plenty. If he tries to change the guys mechanics, he likely fails and Florida, Tebow and Meyer all sink.

This article by Florio is ridiculous.

The pressure to win at a big school like Florida is tremendous though. They don't give you the option of preparing players technically to play in the pros.

As regards to Florida's bowl chances. They shouldn't have much of a problem. It's Florida. They'll still get the recruits.

You would think that Meyer would help out given what Tebow has done for him and UF. We have to put things in perspective here...top recruits are going to top schools so that they can eventually get to the NFL. If college coaches are promising kids they can get them in the NFL by means of their program than they should be helping them get there. The article just points out that coaches like Meyer are willing to sucker in kids so that they can better the school's program but give nothing in return to the athlete for their future.

We'll see...if Tebow doesn't pan out then how does a top school recruit kids with the reputation of taking one of the "greatest college football player ever" to a bust in the NFL? Kids playing for UF are looking to go to the next level without a doubt...

They showed video of Tebow's new mechanics on ESPN. While it looks like he will be ok dropping back, his throwing motion looks neither natural or quick. Hopefully, for his benefit, they are only showing the drills and not his actual final mechanics.

If his mechanics were as bad as they showed on ESPN, nobody will want that kid any sooner than the mid third. Who wants a top pick that's going to end up throwing to the linebackers?

Meyer's job is to win at the University of Florida, he did that with Tim Tebow and his unprofessional throwing motion. As a by product, Tebow was a yearly Heisman candidate and national championship contender, broke a slew of college football records and lived the life of a champion/hero/god on one of the largest campuses in the country. What will happen now? Tim Tebow will get drafted, probably no later than the third round, and will probably end up being a millionaire. He seems like an intelligent guy who has passions other than football, so he'll probably end up being successful and influential in his future career goals.

Oh no, Urban Meyer really screwed of Tim Tebow. Parents, be warned, don't let your kids go to Florida to live the life that rest of us could only dream of. The horror.

Give me a break.

He may not end up being a millionaire. At least from the NFL. If he were to only last a couple of years in the league, which is a real possibility, he probably won't end up a millionaire. Also it's about maximizing your talent into getting a pay day.

If I'm a top college recruit, I'm going to look at the reputation Urban Meyer is starting to develop (busts with Alex Smith and Tebow), and I would go elsewhere. It's about getting drafted high and being ready to play well in the NFL. With Tebow it doesn't appear either will be the case.

Meyer will have no shortage of kids wanting to come to Gainesville.

If Saban or someone popped in a tape, I would be asking 'Wasn't that the SEC championship they just won?' or 'Wasn't this the game that won him the Heisman?'

Sportswriters nowadays are clueless.

I don't know. If I had the choice of winning a National Championship or getting a multi-million dollar contract I would choose the contract hands down.

I wouldn't really call Florio a sports writer.

He's just a guy who has a few sources and reports from a blog ... mixing in the occasional "turd" reference.

Look at the contract that we gave Stephen McGee...

Signed a four-year, $2.282 million contract. The deal included a $532,000 signing bonus. 2009: $310,000, 2010: $395,000, 2011: $480,000, 2012: $565,000, 2013: Free Agent

After two years in the league, McGee will have earned $1,237,000 dollars, before taxes. Tebow will most likely be drafted higher than McGee was and will also most likely play out his rookie contract, even if he's bad. That probably means he'll be pulling in around $3 million, before taxes, over the next 4 years. If he lives modestly and invests wisely, his rookie contract could last him the rest of his life.

I think Tebow has some things to overcome but I think if he can go to a team who is not looking to rush him into the lineup and willing to work with him and develop him then I think he could surprise some people. I think he has the work ethic and desire to learn

Interesting. I had no idea McGee made so much. Nonetheless I would still rather play for a different coach. While McGee's contract is nice, I would still prefer a Matt Ryan contract. I'll admit though, I may be wrong and Meyer's recruiting won't be affected at all.
