Teen catches his own 40-yard pass

ANVEL, Texas -- Gary Haynes of Manvel High School is known all around the Web as the teen that can catch his own football pass.
His Vine video posted on Sunday shows him throwing the ball up high and then running quite a distance to catch it.

He says it was 45 yards.

"I didn't think it was gonna blow up to be this big to be honest," admitted Haynes. "I just kept hearing my phone going off and looked at it and it was Twitter from ESPN, Sports Nation."

Some allege the video is fake, pointing to the fact that you can't see the ball's shadow. It wouldn't be the first time a little trickery was used in a Vine video.

Mmmm looks fake to me but who knows.

I imagine it's because we have no frame of reference for having seen anyone do something like that before. It looks real to me. He threw it pretty far up in the air, and it looks closer to 30-35 yards. Plenty of time to get underneath it for someone with some wheels.

If you grew up being an only child you did this countless times in the backyard. Not too difficult. You just sky it straight up and run after it.

It is difficult over 40 yards. Twenty seems doable. There is a video of Jamal Charles doing the same thing from a couple of years ago. It was fake and I think this one is as well. I just found the coverage of the story to be the funny part.

Yeah I don't know how far he went. Yeah I think someone else threw the ball, but I don't know that for sure.

Yeah it doesn't look like he "skyed" it. Unless this kid runs as fast if not faster than usain bolt I call BS. logically the ball has a 10 yard head start since he starts his run pretty much from a dead stop.

I'm a little late to the party, but I just found a little link that likely debunks this myth:

Anyway, it makes sense if you watch the video. If you see the kid throw the ball, there's no way he could get 40 yards on that pass. He basically "skies" it when it leaves his hand, meaning he just throws it up very high. Those type of throws would be hard to go 40 yards even if you were an NFL QB, let alone some kid. So, anyway, what likely happened was he threw the ball somewhere off to the side so that the camera couldn't catch it. That's why he had to sky it high enough so it would go above the camera's view. Then he had someone else standing behind him who threw him a perfect pass. This explains why the pass was so perfect. The kid just ran straight out and the ball came to him. It didn't look like he was running to the ball. It just looked like he was running straight out and the person who actually threw the ball threw it where he could get it.

There is no way you can run fast enough to catch your own pass
Well, that's obviously not true. I can just throw it straight up. But you meant, "there is no way anyone could catch his own 40-yard pass," I assume. Let's see.

How fast can a QB run 40 yards? Kaepernick's one of the fastest, and he ran a 4.53 at his combine. So your pass has to travel 40 yards in no less than 4.53 seconds.

What would it take to throw a ball 40 yards in exactly 4.53 seconds? Ignoring air resistance, you'd need to throw it at around a 70 degree angle from horizontal, and you'd have to throw it at a speed of 53 mph. Given air resistance, you'd have to throw it faster and at a bit lower angle to get it there.

How fast can a QB throw a ball? Kaepernick threw 59 mph at his combine.

So it's not impossible.

It's also not impossible that I will marry Kate Beckinsale but I don't see it happening either.
His point was, you weren't specific in your assumption that it's impossible to throw it to yourself. But throwing a 40 yard pass to yourself is probably possible. Michael Vick probably could have done it. Kaepernick might be able to. I think what makes this kid less believeable is the throwing part than the running part. He very well might be fast enough. The thing is, he's a little high school kid with toothpick arms. I don't think he's capable of getting the proper velocity, angle and hang time to catch his own pass. I don't even think he has the arm power to throw a 40 yard pass and that angle. But it's definitely probably possible to do. I just don't think this kid could do it. Plus, like people have pointed out, the kid throws the ball from the left but the ball he catches comes in from the right.

I really hate when people call others a liar without knowing, and for no legit reason.
It disgusts me.

So you all are calling this kid AND his HS coach ( who made him do it again in front of him) liars?

The only thing debatable was how far it went. It was just an estimate. But come on...two balls? Jeez
But I guess there is a chance that pass on the video only traveled 35 years, sine there were no yard markers.

I tend to assume that those that so freely call others a liar (thinking lying is no big deal) probably tend to lie a lot themselves.
