A 13-year-old boy who police say was doused with gasoline and lit on fire last week while walking home from school is recovering from first-degree burns to his face and head.

The boy was just two blocks from his home in Kansas City Tuesday when two teenagers began to follow him and then attacked him, his mother, Melissa Coon, said.

Make an example out of them.

I remember a similar story about kids who did this same thing with rubbing alcohol. I don't know what happened to them but it needs to be swift and severe.

Hopefully, the culprits will be arrested asap. Setting another human being on fire is a hate crime, regardless of any mitigating circumstance. They should not and cannot be allowed to repeat this offense upon someone else.

No just on warped people. Hard to even imagine for anyone to do things like this as well as the many other things that we see people do to each other.

Sadly that was my very first thought as well when I saw the title of this topic.

Second thing is that they need to swiftly make a huge example of these two who did this. Of course they'll wind up getting some sort of insanity BS and wind up out and walking the streets when they're 18 or 21 because some bleeding heart group will come along and blame their disgusting act on something else.

I agree. When you go stupid and hateful to this extent, you don't get to play with the rest of us anymore. Good riddance.

Wonder where the usual suspects are to call this a racially based hate crime?

Oh wait .... I know why.

I think he means that since the attackers were black and the victim was white, some won't consider it a "hate crime" based on race.

I maybe wrong.

Wow this is just terrible. Hopefully the boy is ok, recovers, and lives a full life. You just hate to see this kind of stuff. Hopefully the kids who did this are caught and punished appropriately.

I dunno about that.

Even still, what does that have to do with the "usual suspects" making the claim.

It was just a odd statement, IMO.

Looks like it was motivated to some extent by race. I don't think an act need to be exclusively about race in order to be a hate crime.

Would they have lit another black kid on fire or would they just have kicked his *** on the way home?

The burns aren't all that bad so he'll live.

I had 2nd-degree burns that covered a good portion of my left side between my waist and armpit when I was really young.

Most pain I have ever experience in my life was going in to the hospital to soak in a tub for a few minutes followed by debridement with a wire brush.

1st-degree burn is actually a pretty fortunate result from being doused with gas and lit on fire.

I guess the primary concern is the burns to his eyes.
