Teleport the Zone back to the 70's

Nearly lifelong pet peeve: Personally, I do not care if it's a Pee Wee football quarterback, a 60 and over flag football quarterback or any quarterback at any level of football inbetween. A quarterback's job is not throwing picture perfect passes. It's 100% throwing catchable passes.

Serious question. Dead serious question. It is not a question to single out anybody.

Why is it necessary to nitpick this pass in any way, shape, form or fashion?

This was a 100% catchable touchdown pass. 100% of any criticism should go to the player dropping the pass. This is one of those rare times I will not add, "in my opinion."

I think that’s the whole point of this thread, but people are missing it. Prescott and Romo get absolutely torn apart for throwing a pass like that, with critics saying they should have led the receiver better, thrown it a little higher, or released it a little sooner. Then they nitpick every detail using ultra 4K HD videos in extreme slow motion, frame-by-frame at 120FPS, analyzing every single pass our quarterbacks have thrown over the last couple of decades. Then say that's why they make the big bucks for those moments to throw a better pass. FACTS

It feels pretty hypocritical for someone to say “don’t say in my opinion” and then suddenly claim quarterbacks should only throw catchable passes.

I’m not nitpicking, but I think that misses the bigger picture of how social media, the internet, analytics, high-quality video, and countless sports outlets dissect plays nonstop, 24/7. Players would get blasted for that pass or a bad catch.

Sure, it was catchable, but it wasn’t perfect, maybe the tight end expected it to lead him and wasn’t ready to stop, drop, and reach back a bit.

He’s a tight end, not a special receiver. I'm just saying when I see the title of this thread that's where I'm going with my point I think they would tear this apart anyone who says they wouldn't I think is being a hypocrite because they do it now They expect the quarterback who Are now and always have been in the spotlight there the most famous and highly paid position so yes that pass should have been caught But also you can't just blame the tight end it was not a perfect pass.

It can be the whole point of the thread, which I believe is irrelevant since it is based upon a generality of 'everything' quarterbacks might be criticized for. I posted a detailed OP following the first Philadelphia game of CeeDee Lamb dropping catchable passes. My post, that you have quoted, specifically targets a single dropped receiving attempt.

Anyone and everyone can throw rocks at everything quarterbacks may or may not do well. My post has solely to do with Roger Staubach throwing a totally catchable pass. That's it. It is unnecessary to suggest mix it within the usual CowboysZone quarterback conversational quagmire.

Maybe I am wrong, but did you just do the unthinkable and compare our current QB to Roger?
You’re wrong. He’s talking in general about our current fan base hyperventilating after every down.

Let's think about this for a bit and then discuss...if this were 1979, would many Zoners be ripping Roger for losing to the Steelers? He should've thrown a better pass to Jackie Smith, Landry was a genius in the early 70s, but now, the league has caught up to him...etc. what else would we be complaining about?
The constant lowering of expectations and happiness to accept and defend mediocre results would not be one of the things we would be complaining about.

Your points though were very accurate. Landry was just 5 or so years later in reality (complaining about the game passing him by that is).

as usual you spout a lot and say nothing as you clearly did not research Jackie Smiths record at all
HOF TE and one of the best receiving tight ends of that era
He has always said a ball that hits his hands is one he should have caught

Since I typed the words "Staubach should have thrown a better pass" I'll address this.

My comment was mostly tongue in cheek and made because Ranching referenced that play in his attempt to troll the haters.

That was a ball that should have been caught. It was also a ball, that in Staubach's own words should have been thrown better. Both things can be true.

It was a combination of things that went wrong. It was so wide open that Staubach tossed it instead of firing it in there like they no doubt did in practice dozens if not hundreds of times. Smith had to wait on it more than he was used too, and he was caught in the no mans land of deciding to stay up or go down to get it. They both had to much time to think and it cost dearly.

At least that's what Staubach had to say about it.

Those cowboys could do no wrong in my eyes back then.

Im having like a movie flashback thing, slow motion, everyone has long hair and is smiling…

You and Coogy throwing the football around, wind blowing, etc. Man what a time….sigh.

It’s never too late to make things right.

We absolutely would be ripping Hollywood Henderson. Saying Bradshaw couldn’t spell CAT if you spotted him the C and the T … and then losing the game?

It would be merciless.

Of course we didn’t know about Too Tall’s infamous Roman orgies at the time, which also involved Hollywood and Bethea as regulars, but no way Tex could keep that under wraps in the era of social media. It would have been on TMZ

It was the 1960’s and not the 70’s, but maybe even Dandy Don. Meredith was the go-to quote machine for those early Cowboy teams. If he was his usual upbeat self after a loss, it would be bad.

It was real men, coaches, and football players back then ........ not billionaires playing fantasy football and coaches making it "rain" and playing lazer tag with the players.
Keep telling yourself that. The privilege and entitlement was definitely the same, maybe more. The number of zeroes on the checks was just different

I can’t even say, but probably right. I would think that was a smaller group back then. Now, even the minimum salary is pretty high. The middle guys have plenty of money to toss around.

I’m thinking back then it was only about the top guys, but, I don’t know. I can’t go backing that up with anything beyond logic.

Bold> Again, As I have always said, like in September 2008 on this site (link):

...We didn't score enough and one of the primary reasons why was because Jackie Smith dropped a sure touchdown IN THE ENDZONE. With respect to Roger "Captain Comeback" Staubach, who is too classy to lay blame, the replay shows Smith sliding, BUT Staubach pass was aimed at Smith's numbers.
It wasn't a perfect pass, but hell, it was more than good enough.
_______________________

This keeps happening on repeat over and over again, both here and in the real world:
  • I never said it was a perfect pass
  • It could have been thrown better and that is the gospel truth
^ Somehow, some way, what I say does not penetrate for everyone hearing or reading my position on quarterbacks and passing the ball:

It is not necessary for any quarterback, including greats like Staubach, to throw perfect passes. Ever. A quarterback's only passing responsibility is throwing catchable passes. He threw a catchable touchdown pass that Smith dropped. I am forever clueless why that is never the end of the story.
