In NY, that could be considered a safety feature!

I am reminded of that poor African exchange student that some of NY's finest blew away while he was trying to show them his ID. IIRC, they fired 53 rounds and hit him 18 times. That's 35 stray shots. In Texas they would have been fired for incompetance.

That is not true; I know of a guy in HPD that they promoted to sergeant so they could put him on a desk because he discharged his gun into the hood of his car.

The real issues is that unlike the movies these guys do not get the proper amount of training and no they do not spend hours at the range. They do not have the budget or the man power to get the cops training. They do a one week in service training that is all book work refresher stuff and new law stuff. Heck a lot of times they are under manned on their normal patrols because of vacation sick time etc etc.

It was a bit of hyperbole.

Otherwise I agree with what you are saying. I have a relative who's a police officer, and he's fired his gun once in 30 years on the job. My friends who shoot IDPA tell me that the police officers who come in as rookies into that system are generally pretty terrible to start with. Outside of the elite units, they just don't get that much firearms training.

You need to practice WEEKLY at least to remain profecient with a handgun.

For officers that also would mean not just regular target practice but combat practice using pop up targets.

Unfortunately no police force does that

It's never the fault of the gun, it's always the fault of the idiot behind the trigger.

The problem is that it appears (admittedly from on outsiders perspective), it's far too easy for idiots to get hold of them

The thing is though, everything is by definition political.

It would help to have a definition by the moderators/admin of the site, as to exactly what they refer to as politics.

If I posted an article about NASA landing a rover on Mars, that's political, but some people might focus more on the landing in itself.

I'm just saying specificity would help, because it's a very broad subject.
