Terence Newman has reached certain incentives in his original contract that will make him a Unrestricted Free Agent after this season. Between now and March 2, 2008 Dallas has to re-sign Terence Newman, Tony Romo, Julius Jones and Flozell Adams or they all become Unrestricted Free Agents.

Personally, I would only re-sign Romo and Newman out of that group. I would give Marion Barber III extensive playing time in training camp and preseason. If he looks like he can handle the load, I would start shopping Julius Jones around. As soon as some other team loses a RB due to injury, I would light their phone lines up.

Trading Julius Jones before the end of week 6 of the regular season to a team that has a hole at the RB spot would be much better than letting him walk in Free Agency and a whole helluva lot better than over paying to re-sign him.

I agree that Romo and Newman are necessary to resign.

Flozell will be gone after this year so we don't need to worry about him.

The one that I would be most concerned about is Julius. I think depending on where we draft next year and our ability to get McFadden will determine his fate.

I personally don't think McFadden is our answer. I think we have the answer on already on the team. I really believe Battle will end up as 3rd RB and if given the opportunity he will show the mistake team made by not drafting him. I think he has all the skills needed to be our top back. He just need time.

No way are we trading Julius Jones until we sure Barber will be a viable #1 RB and we've also added another RB as Barber's backup. If those 2 obstacles have been covered & Jones has shown enough to attract strong interest from a few teams, then I'd be totally on board trading him for a first day pick in 08.

Hopefully Jones signs Newman to a new 5 year contractour. Also on board with re-signing Romo but not until we've seen enough of his play during the regular season. I think Romo is the man but, with so much money paid out to QBs, we need to be very sure.

I doubt Flozel comes back next year but hopefully OT Doug Free or McQuistan will be ready.

Yep, despite what Jerry may say in the press, I think the plan is for Free or McQ to take over for Flo. That's one huge contract we can avoid paying.

I think Dallas should concentrate on re-signing Romo and Newman and let the chips fall where they may in regards to Julius Jones and Flozell Adams...

I want to wait and see on Newman; people forget he is turning 29 this year, and he has only been in the league for four years. I am dissapointed we didn't try harder to get a corner in the draft, because I know cover corners are hard to find in the league like Newman, but I don't know how much I want to offer a guy who could possibly break down in two years.

We are NOT re-signing Flozell Adams. Have you watched him play? he is practically stealing money from us. We don't HAVE to resign any of these players. Newman and Romo are top-priority, though. JJ has this year to prove himself.

I hope you guys are right because LT is probably the second most important position on the team.

Romo and Newman will be back. If Flozell has a down year, wouldn't be surprised to see us let him walk without an offer.

As for JJ, this is his season. If he can't prove he's a #1 back this year, he may not be the answer.

You don't offer a huge contract to a 33 year old underachieving LT...Wait let me amend that... inept LT. ( he is just too-slow footed to deal with fast DE's, which is the position where they are the most prevalent, opposite the LT)

Look at Alan Faneca for example; he has been one of the best lineman in the NFL regardless of position the past few years, and the Steelers have STILL not even offered him a deal. Why should we even offer a huge contract to Flo' if he isn't even producing? I wouldn't even know which team would offer him that large of a deal... that is except for Jerrah. (*urghhh*)

Why would he break down in two years? He doesn't as much mileage as say a 22 year old rookie who's been in the league for seven years.

As long as he stays healthy and in top notch shape he still has four or five good years in him.

Maybe he can be our Darrell Green and play until he's 42.

Hey, I don't mean to be the town pessimist, I am just trying to play devils advocate here. I know the NFL is more rigorous than college, but lets not kid ourselves; football is football is football. Even if he has been in the league for only four years, he played college ball for four years. If he was three years younger when he came into the league, his body would have probably had a better capability to heal from the punishment better. We are going to re-sign him, I know that. But I am wary. The muscles are going to heal slower, and the pains are going to last longer. I think Anthony Henry may be gone after this year, I don't know He gets injured all the time it seems. He ain't exactly a spring chicken himself.

Its the mileage, not the years that take the toll. A top CB can physically stay fine untill 33 or so. Just depends on the person. Newman is a workout fiend and hardly ever even gets dinged up. I think he will be good for another 4 years, and still very good for a year or two more; when he could become the Nickel CB if we have been able to replace him by then. So I would not have a problem signing him to a 5 year extension- longer so we could stretch out the signing bonus.

You can always tell the youngsters in the crowd when they think late 20s is nearing decrepitude. :laugh2:

CB isn't like RB or strong safety with tons of big collisions. Barring serious injuries, knock on wood, Newman should be able to play well for many more years.

the arrival of Wade is perfect for us to assess Newman's real value...too often last year the CBs in Parcells defense handed the WRs off to the Safeties. Not as much with Wade....if Newman wants to get paid...he is going to have to man up all year and we will see once and for all what he is worth

Why would we trade Julius? Who would be our primary RB? Don't tell me you think MBIII can carry the full load himself because he can't.

I can agree with that. I think the kid (Battle) is hungry and will give everything he's got. Unless they have lied on this guy's numbers and the clips I have seen have been altered, he has nothing but an upside to his game.
