Just finished my workout and about to get a little extra in. Expecting more of myself each an every day

Hope the doesn't get hurt doing the extra work.

I think the most 'work' he'll have to do is on his contract.

The 'rumors' were already floated around plenty that if he doesn't 'rework' that, the rest of the 'work' won't matter.

Dangerously close to a jab. We'll need a ruling from the judges here...

:lmao:

But it all honesty, that's what I think it comes down to with Newman.

Each of his workouts start with 10 yards of cushion.

Seriously though, I am rooting for the guy.

I wouldnt mind reworking his contract if he's willing, but I'd very much prefer keeping him at current money than cutting him altogether unless we plan on getting Nnamdi or Joseph. We cannot go into camp with Orlando Scandrick starting at corner.

So does everyone else's

It's the scheme (or was the scheme anyway)

DB does not determine the cushion he gives. There are times he is up on the line but the defensive call will determine where and how he lines up

I'm not interested in Scandrick starting either but I think you can do better than paying Newman what he's due to make this year as well. I'd rather take my chances signing Brent Grimes for a lot less than overpaying Newman again.

My first choice would be signing Asomugha to replace him.

You suggested in another thread that you would rather have NA then have another year of excuses of why our secondary sucks. It seems you would rather have the best player on the field at all costs.....

....then this post contradicts that.

Newman >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Grimes

I'd put money on Newman restructuring his contract or being cut then resigned to a lesser one anyway...making all of this NA crap go away anyway. No way do I make the same mistake twice by overpaying another CB in his "prime" just to watch his play decline...something we'll likely see with NA.

Maybe you think so, but I don't.

And I think I included aa mention of Grimes being considerably cheaper than Newman as well. In my opinion, Grimes at a lesser price would be more desirable for me than overpaying Newman for another year.

He was grossly overpaid for his poor performance last season. And people can make whatever excuses for him and Marc Colombo's lousy play that they would like, but it doesn't change the fact that neither guy gets it done anymore and both should be replaced no matter what great 'team guys' they are.

Perhaps we will but I'd rather take my chances with him and that possibility more than I would overpaying the certainty in the decline in play with Newman that we've already seen.

Asomugha would be Newman's age at the end of a 3-year deal.

What's overpaying for Newman? If he's our best CB and not even paid in the top-20 for his position, is he still overpaid? And how much are we willing to compromise the pass defense to avoid overpaying a player for his last year as a Cowboy?

Personally, if Newman wants to stay more than a year, I'd rework his deal. If I can replace him with an equal or better player without killing the cap, I do it regardless. If I can't, there's no way I get rid of the guy this year.

Is this an accurate statement? I have a hard time thinking that there are 19 corners making better than $8 million per year. But even if there are, Newman's play sure doesn't match his salary, therefore he's still overpaid in my book.

I see where his contract goes to 2014 so I'm not sure what you mean?

If there's not a better option, I would too. But I don't think it's up to him but rather the team. And I think the previous 'rumors' sent that very message to him and his agent.

I'm with you here. I wouldn't cut him just to cut him unless I can get a viable alternative.

I said 'if' because I don't feel like finding the support again, but earlier in the offseason when this kept coming up there was a dc.com article that took starting CBs 2010 salaries into consideration and, IIRC, Newman was ~24th on the list.

I mention it because it's so popular to say the guy's overpaid when people cite his scheduled salary, but there's never any sense of where that salary actually ranks relative to what other #1 CBs get paid. In reality, it's very possible that Newman's play did, in fact, match his salary last season. Maybe he was even underpaid for his production, and what's going on is we've got a lot of posters who should appreciate TNew more than they do, but they just don't have a sense of what starting CBs get paid in the NFL.

My bad, this was unclear. I think we very likely draft a CB high next year since we didn't do it this year. And that player will then be TNew's replacement. Right now we're just not in any place to replace him, and the options for doing so adequately on the free market are going to be way too expensive.[/QUOTE]
