Terence Newman

He is pretty bad. I do like the idea of him playing FS however.

I don't think he was guessing on that last play. It was just the correct thing to do in that situation.

That pass concept is the smash. Basically, the QB reads the CB, if he plays the corner route, the ball goes underneath. If he plays the underneath route, the ball goes to the corner route. Since Washington had no timeouts and 13 seconds, any routes releasing inside are fails.

A better route to call underneath would have been an out or maybe a hitch to the outside shoulder. That way, at least you have two options as an offense and Newman wouldn't have had to make such an easy decision.

The fact that he was trying to figure out what the offense is doing in order to make turnovers happen proves that the guy takes the time to study film and study opposing offenses.

Fans are fans for a reason.

Notice how our secondary got progressively worse every year since Campo came back as the DB coach? Coincidence? I think not.

I have a feeling T-New has issues with Campo and maybe that has something to do with why T-New has gotten worse past few years.

I think the video played earlier in the thread says a lot. Could be injuries, could be poor technique, could be lack of speed. But these guys look confused as to what they're supposed to be doing. If you're confused in the secondary, you're gonna get beat.

I've heard from someone that has ties close to the organization that Newman quit on Campo over a season ago.

I beg to differ. With his ovbious disdain for tackling, he would make an even worse FS than CB. He has never lived up to his status as the 5th (was it?) pick in the draft and as I posted earlier, he made a play at the end, but he had a lousy game in general...

I'm not sure what to think of T-New. I know he has looked awful the last couple of months. Before he injured his ribs though, I thought he was playing well. Between him and Jenkins I guess our cb's are just awful. I just have no answers with the secondary its been bad for years.

Something about him isn't right. Even when he caught that interception it looked like he was in pain. I think its clear he's playing with some form of injury. Maybe due to some incentives in his contract or something. Something is not right. Ever since that rib injury he's been a step slow. Either way he's had a decent season. The criticism Newman gets stems from people not actually watching other teams play. Because there is not a corner in this league that doesn't get beat deep. Its just not. The rules in this league now favor the quarterback and receiver and just leave your cornerback out to dry.

We have a 20 point lead and he is trying to guess what play they are running? How about protecting vs the deep ball. His wrong guess and spearing of a guy that was already down almost cost them a game they should of won by at least 10 points.

I wonder: does every sports message board have a new thread every time its best CB gives up a big play? Or is it just ours?

And can we quit pretending its always an excuse from people who support Newman's play this season? It's not always the safety help. CBs get beat. They sometimes get beat on big plays. It's not the end of the world, or a sign that a guy is losing it every time it happens.

We've got a lot bigger problems on defense that have nothing at all to do with the age or play of Terence Newman.

That isn't surprising to me at all. Perhaps a new DC and 2ndary coach will also bring a changed in TNew's attitude and his play.

Newman has lost a step, but he's still a good solid corner. What we need is a new secondary coach and d-coordinator.

:hammer:

Add the name Brett Maxie to Campo's as well.. THat doesn't take away from the fact that Newman is done, but it's the truth nevertheless.

I have no idea why he was brought back.

Why is the word "fact" so hard for some of you to differentiate from "opinion"?

It's really not that hard.

Newman isn't done. Just my OPINION. See? It's easy.

Are you serious? If there's one of the better things he does, it's tackling.

I'm convinced he has some sort of injury that's impacting his efforts.

And you're right. He's been beat up for a long stretch of games now. Keeping only 3 CBs was a dunderhead move on Jerry.

He injured his ankle vs the Giants. Its not the dreaded High Ankle sprain but its nagging. His ribs are better but still not fully healed; for a while he was getting shot up every game.

I doubt Newman would hold up physically at safety and I don't think he really likes to play physical. But when he sets his mind to making a tackle he is quite good. See his open field wrap-up of LeSean McCoy last week.

If posters here could just add that little qualifier, "just my opinion", it could make a huge difference in the civility of this place (in my opinion :) ).

But don't hold your breath. :(

A very good corner that gets a lot of undue criticism.

the stats will not support you this year.

when the coverage metrics come out he'll be ranked very poorly.
as will mike jenkins.

i am fairly certain jenkins has been better the last 6 games but was far worse the first 6.

hardly like last year when both guy were top 15 corners.
