Terence Steele at RT again

How would Gallup unretiring have anything to do with the signing bonus and guaranteed money Dallas gave him?
For Dallas to get any relief on that he would have had to been picked up on waivers, with that team assuming the rest of the contract. I can’t remember if he was waiver eligible!
Even if he hadn’t retired Dallas was still responsible for the dead cap because he wasn’t picked up on waivers by anyone so it was a completely different contract he signed with the Raiders!
I'm not sure how any of that works but the fact that he was a raider first I don't see how we have any responsibility unless there's some kind of dead cap that can't be removed which I doubt there's a lot of that left.. He basically retired as a as a raider unretired and they must have let his rights go or something but I'm pretty sure the Raiders have some responsibility to some of the money...

Jerry paid him based off a good year prior to his ACL injury

- What's surprising was Steele still mending from that very injury, when the Jones decide to resign a new deal, maybe in fear that he'll walk to another nfl team in FA.

- I didn't care for sorry Solari as OL coach, so who knows how much he added to the woes of an ACL recovering Steele.

- Apparently cowboys gonna gamble on one more deciding Steele before they are forced to make him a casualty cut.

- Best to have a Plan B in case Steele has his struggles again.(asim Richard's, etc)
Some thought Terrence gradually got better at seasons end.
Maybe the club saw it the same way and hope it continues into 2025 season.
also Have Nate Thomas from last year's draft to add to the competition along with Richards , Waletzko etc...big camp battles with Steele and Guyton trying to stay starters, while the others fight to take it away.,.

I think that RT will be an open position this next preseason.

However, I know that some related injuries can take up to 18 months to heal. Regaining confidence in how your body reacts can also be a slow process.

I'm hoping to see a better Steele next season.

We released him with a June 1st destination and 3 years left on his contract! We are still responsible for the guaranteed money proration that was paid as bonus.
It doesn’t just go poof like a fart in the wind, just because someone else signs him.
I can’t remember if he was waizer eligible!
Regardless, no one picked him up on waivers so any team was able to renegotiate a completely new contract!

Last season we signed Zeke to a 3m contract while simultaneously paying the 2nd year of dead cap from his June 1st destination the previous off season!

Thomas is a guard and looks to lack the athleticism to even play there. I don’t even think they bothered with the delusion he could play tackle!

It wouldn't but the issue is I wasn't aware of his contract ramifications as i pay little attention to that aspect of things. I dont work in the FO so Im more locked in to on field performance stuff versus contracts and financials

He's a tackle no one's delusional he's listened at the tackle he was a tackle so I'm assuming he'll get a chance to fight a tackle and compete that's what you do that's what really these OT A's mini camps training camp and pre seasons all about it's not about the veterans it's about this you have positions that needs to be solidified and you let the best man win and in this case it may be for the backup spots but you never know one can step up I don't see how you don't think the guys is 6'4 330 can play tackle you think he's too big?

All I'm saying is we have bodies to compete so you guys think that wearing big trouble there i'm saying it's too soon I trust the new coaching staff who by the way were very meticulously handpicked because of what the offensive coordinators best trait was when he was a offensive line coach so they bring another guy in who is one of the best offensive line coaches they could pick through this off season so they're changing the scheme and they're going to improve the run game so they're going to be looking at everybody on this roster and give them all a shot you remember the position flex thing it's a real thing they're going to try the mall at different positions starting here in a couple of weeks.

So how about we just watch and see what happens saying we need to pick over and over the same positions every off season is just futile it doesn't make any sense.

First of all what I'm saying is how are we talking about Michael Gallup why does it matter every team has these type of players that have dead cap money attached to them that's the problem with kicking money down the road with the salary cap they're all going to pay the Piper eventually but it can't be that much that we're talking about him I don't even know why Michael Gallup's name is being mentioned in here maybe that's where I'm lost but I really don't care because it's minimal there's no way that it could be that big yes Ezekiel Elliott I was very aware he still had six million in dead cat money but it is nowhere near that with Michael Gallup...

The original question was why they didn’t designate Steele as June first cut. They used their allotted two for this season.
You can only have 2 players per season. Last year it was Zeke’s 2nd season and Gallup’s first.
This year it’s Gallup’s 2nd and Martins first!

They stuck him at guard. All the training camp reports on him last season were at guard. Even the initial draft report on draft day stated he was going to be moved to guard due to athletic limitations!
As stated, he looked too athletically limited to even play guard in camp last season!

I bet they look at him at T this camp given they signed Jones and Charles on the interior, but honestly I dont see a very good path for him to make the team either way unless the injury bug hits. You're right that his best position is G, but Dallas can only keep so many players and Smith/Hoffman/Beebe/Jones/Charles/Bass should have those spots locked down on the interior, and even of that group one may have to go if they choose to keep 4 Tackles.

He actually played well the last 1/2 of 2024. Took longer then expected returning from a torn ACL.
He did pretty well run blocking. His pass blocking has struggled but a good run game helps everyone’s pass blocking. If we defense has to respect the run it makes them just a tick slower.

I can't believe we are going to be paying him $18,125,000 for being one of the worst RT's in the NFL. Dude really had 1 good year (contract year) and Jerry Jones overpaid for him. With how bad our offensive line was last year I am very surprised we didn't attempt to address that in FA.
The way to have addressed that was get a LT and move Guyton to RT. Now they have no choice but keep Steele

Eh, he’s either 6th on the depth chart at guard or 6th on the depth chart as tackle.
Considering last season’s preseason and their predetermined thoughts of what they considered him to be they’d probably be better off moving Bass back to OT (college position) before attempting to play Thomas there. They’d be better off just releasing Thomas and going with a late round draft pick or UDFA!
Unless Charles just completely kills camp (unlikely) I’m guessing he’s being looked at strictly as a Practice Squad call up in desperation mode with not much actual chance of making the roster!

Exactly. Thats the bigger issue with Thomas, regardless of what position they try and stick him at the guy is not serious competition going into camp for either G or T as far as making the final roster goes.

I'm just saying at some point you probably just need to throw out anything you heard or saw from the old coaching staff.. They literally will have a different perspective on each and every one of these players and we'll see how it plays out in training camp that's my point....

They're very well could be changes I see them adding somebody a veteran after the draft maybe later than that into the process like Edoga they need to replace the swing tackle and they usually do that later..

They did this a few years ago with Gilmore and cooks made a good trade got some solid players and I'm assuming one of those will be a tackle at some point...

If Thomas was a poor fit athletically for Salari’s mostly man scheme at tackle, as the team seemed to think, he’s going to be a much poorer fit in the inside/outside zone scheme they have hinted at Riley running!
His ability to move in space is limited to the size of a phone booth!

Good post and nice work actually digging deeper than the "its a new OL coach so things will be better, trust me bro" arguments. The physical limitations of certain players are still there regardless of the coaching staff. Some guys may benefit from a change, some might regress. I wish more people would look at what the Cowboys are actually trying to implement here and be open to educated guesses from the pros and cons of each individual players abilities.
