The third-year corner is back with the team that drafted him after a year abroad. But though he might currently classified as a cornerback, the Cowboys are experimenting by moving Mitchell to a variety of spots this spring – most notably, nickel back and safety.

“He has a lot of physical traits that would make you think he could play safety,” said Cowboys coach Jason Garrett last spring. “You saw some of that when he was playing nickel last year at the end of the year.”

“He just has some awareness about him. He has some play-making ability,” Garrett said.

Saying a CB moving to nickelback is a position change is like saying because Dez lined up inside a few plays, he's a slot WR.

Playing slot corner is very, very different than playing outside corner. You can't bump a guy and don't have the sidelines as an ally. This is why losing Orlando Scandrick was such a blow last season, because he always moved to the slot-and excelled-against three receiver looks.

It's definitely different technique-wise and in regards to physicality, but 95% of nickelbacks are technically CB's, very few are safeties.

You're right- I think Darren Woodson was the last safety the Cowboys used as a nickel guy in the slot (If I recall correctly). Amazing all the things Woody could do.

He showed some physicality in his tackling last year, that's for sure. I'm not saying he should be playing SS, but on obvious passing downs, I think he could be an option back there instead of Church.

The guy is physical. Let me put it this way, I think he has more upside than at safety than Alan Ball... for whatever that's worth.

If you want to go by the categorization for franchise tagging then sure. If you want to look at what they actually do then it's something else. One is simplified for accounting purposes the other is reality.

When he got to play last year he did seem like a ball hawk. Was thinking free safety last year !!!

He's a fairly solid corner. Could definitely see him as a back up F.S. in place of Wilcox maybe ?
He has the size and would be relatively cheap ...
