ELON, N.C. -- Terrell Hudgins, the most prolific pass-catcher in the history of NCAA Division I football, has agreed to sign a rookie free agent contract with the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys. He becomes the second Elon player to continue his career in the NFL in the last four seasons, joining Chad Nkang who played two seasons for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Hudgins will travel to Dallas at the end of the week and will participate in a rookie minicamp this weekend.
"All I asked for was to just have the opportunity to get a shot in the NFL," said Hudgins. "Now I have one and it is with a great organization in Dallas. I'm excited to go to Dallas. They have a tradition of great receivers and I want to be mentioned in the same sentence as them. I'm going to do whatever it takes to get on the field and be mentioned along side of guys like Michael Irvin."
In 2009, Hudgins led Elon to a 9-3 overall record and its first-ever appearance in the FCS playoffs on his way to finishing as the runner-up for the 2009 Walter Payton Award which is presented to the top offensive player at the Football Championship Subdivision level. Along the way the standout receiver caught a FCS-record 123 passes for a Southern Conference-record 1,633 yards. He led the nation in receiving yards per game (136.1) and receptions per game (10.3) this season. He picked up one SoCon Player of the Week accolade and was named a first-team All-SoCon member by both the coaches and media in 2009. Hudgins also collected two national player of the week honors during the campaign. He was named to All-America teams by the American Football Coaches Association, The Associated Press and the Walter Camp Football Foundation and The Sports Network.
Added Elon head coach Pete Lembo, "Terrell had a great college career, but more importantly, he is a great person. He contributed immensely to our university both on and off the field over the last four years. I am very happy that he is getting an opportunity to continue his playing career. One of Elon's favorite players is getting a shot with one of America's favorite teams."
Hudgins concluded his career with the Phoenix as the holder of 10 NCAA records, including nine set during the 2009 season. Four of the records were held by the legendary Jerry Rice who played at Mississippi Valley State from 1981-84. He also holds numerous Elon and SoCon marks.
During his four seasons in the maroon and gold, Hudgins collected first-team all-league honors from the SoCon's coaches three times and from the league's media all four years. He was named the SoCon Player of the Week on three occasions and the league's player of the month twice. Hudgins was a three-time first-team member of the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America Team, a two-time AP All-American and a two-time first-team All-America pick by The Sports Network.
Hudgins twice led the nation in both receptions per game and receiving yards per game. As a sophomore in 2007, Hudgins averaged 10.6 catches per contest and 134.0 receiving yards per outing.
In 2007, Hudgins was named Elon's team MVP and was the recipient of the Stein H. Basnight Award as the school's top male athlete.
