Dear Terrell,
Throughout the 2007 season, I've given you the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps your newly found, and less egocentric, attitude has given me hope that you've turned over a new leaf in your NFL life, and, though you may be a late bloomer, my observation is that you may have reached certain level of maturity that is needed for most NFL players in order for them to be good team players.
Though it took you almost 10 years to reach the level of maturity that most players reach in 2 or 3 years, I only ask that you continue this newly found level of insight and introspection of self.
It is up to you T.O.. For you have won over the hearts of many Cowboys fans. We not only thank you, as a matter of fact, for your contributions this year. But we also caution you to recognize that this team could become fragile without a make up of responsible team members.
You belong to a class of players that are deemed amongst the most well respected and you are included in a class of the most sought after legends; within the group that wears the star. The elite wear the star. You're an elite player.
However, I remind you, that your envy (and immaturity) showed that day when you stood on that star only to be leveled to the ground by George Teague.
You didn't look very cool on the ground. That's for sure. And that's what I'm hear to remind you about. Your actions have recently suited you and our team well. As people, we set goals. And with those goals, we hold constant reminders to ourselves that we are to achieve them. We almost consider them mental contracts.
When the season began at Camp Cupcake, you set a new goal for Terrell Owens. You set the goal to set the record strait about T.O. You made a point that we all make mistakes from time to time. After all, we are human and we deserve second chances and new beginnings.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not perfect. And I'm not posting this letter to you, which you'll probably never read, so Cowboy fans can ridicule you for actions prior to you being a Cowboy. I am posting it so that you recognize that we recognize you and what you've done for this team. You've been a big part in the equation of our success. Mental Maturity equals success.
I'm sure it delights you to hear that I like me some T.O..
There was a time when I couldn't say that. No knock on you, but there was a time that it became obvious that a lot of Cowboy fans didn't like you for more reasons than JUST BECAUSE YOU WERE AN EAGLE.
No. It wasn't merely the feathers....
That wouldn't be true. It wasn't being a bird that made us cringe, even though you know as well as we do that being an Eagle carries a certain level of indignity due to the mere fact that they've won diddly squat as far as championships are concerned (not to mention that a team represents its fans and vice versa). It was your antics that we didn't like. We never denied your talent. At least, I know I didn't.
I think I speak for a large majority when I say that you've proved wrong, so far, those of us who were skeptics, or those of us who withheld judgement.
You've done what we demanding Dallas Cowboy fans want a player to do. You've produced, and you've done it somewhat quietly and with a certain aspect of canniness. It's a quite admirable turn around, considering the prior impression that you left upon many of us.
From fans perspectives, of which whom I think you know a large portion never hesitated to cast hasty judgements on you before you even played a down, I think you've won quite a few of us over.
And at this very moment, until the end of our season, this is your chance to prove the doubters wrong. You've been a big part of our success thus far. This is your chance to go down as one of the players on the greatest team. I think you want that star, that you once stood on, to stand for something that represents the champion in you. So stand up for that goal you set at Camp Cupcake, and rise to the occasion.
This is your chance (for the ring)!
