Terrence Mitchell is showing well

I think Mitchell pushes B.W. Webb off the roster.

Absolutely not. He's here to push Carr, and his contract, off the team next year. It's way to soon to give up on a 2nd year player. This pick was all about finding an outside CB that could eventually replace Carr next year. BW is safe for the next year or even two.

Interesting, not sure I'd call one person "hype". I don't really remember Webb making plays in camp, but then again, I never liked the selection. His backpedal at the senior bowl was the oddest one I've seen, but they tried to sell us on his being smooth - meanwhile he was getting torched at the senior bowl practices.

I don't see it that way. He was picked to churn the bottom of the roster / DB's, add depth. If they wanted to push Carr, I think they may have targeted a CB with a higher pick. Now if it turns out he can push him, we won't see that until next year. Carr is not going anywhere as having his roster spot in trouble this year. This is a stretch to think so.

Now as to giving up on a 2nd year player, I can see and understand that, but Webb has not shown a lot IMO, so it's not unreasonable to think he won't make the team. I hope I'm wrong and he shows great progress. There are many players that makes any team, for lack of a better player, only to be replaced the next year. Webb may or may not be one of these, but I'm not convinced yet.

That was what a 10 second Google search pulled up. The guy was receiving the same sort of hype as Mitchell is. My point is that there are training camp heroes every year, and that doesn't necessarily correlate with in-game success.

Glad I'm not the only one who remembered that Webb was also supposedly looking great at this time last year.

I think Mitchell pushes B.W. Webb off the roster.

You have to remember that last years defense was the 3rd worst NFL defense statistically of all time. Many players on the Cowboys lost their confidence because they were being torched on a regular basis. Carr, Claiborne, Webb, name a safety, name a linebacker. There's no doubting that this all was due to the coaching. Switching from the 3-4 plays a role, but you can't use that as an excuse entirely. I think it had more to do with how Kiffin had his players play, i.e. Tampa 2, press or no press that screwed up the players heads. I hope Marinelli can fix this but with the same coaching staff on defense, albeit some positions switched, I have my doubts that he can. If he does, then Jerry needs to give him a huge bonus.

I don't disagree. What I'm getting at, is I don't remember Webb's hype being built on making plays, like Mitchell's is. Trust me, you don't have to warn me against the perils of camp superheroes.

Rookie camp Broaddus thought he did well and even then Jared Green had success against him in at least one practice.

During the rookie minicamp, I thought that B.W. Webb was the best player on the field. But since the veterans have joined the practices the last three weeks, I haven’t noticed him as much as I had before. In these camps, there has been a great deal thrown at these rookies to learn but this scheme is nowhere as complex as what Rob Ryan ran here the last two seasons so I do not believe it’s a mental situation with him, because I have not heard one negative comment about his ability to learn.

OTA's
Some praise 6/11/13
  • On Monday, I wrote that I had my eye on B.W. Webb to see if he could have a type of practice where it gave him a little momentum going into Oxnard. Today with Morris Claiborne out of the lineup, he showed up with some quality work when he was asked to work with the first defense in the nickel and with the twos when he worked inside on the slot.
One of Webb’s best traits is his footwork and the quickness of his feet. On a route today againstAnthony Armstrong who has the best vertical speed of all the receivers, he tried to take Webb down the field to gain separation but he was unable to do so.

Webb managed to keep inside position on the route all while playing the ball in the air. Later in the blitz period, Webb was in the slot on coverage off the defensive right side and Kiffin sent him on a blitz like he had done with Ronde Barber for so many seasons while in Tampa. Webb timed the blitz perfectly and was on Nick Stephens before he had a chance to set his feet. Jason Garrett after practice spoke how Webb does a little something each day to get noticed and for today, he was absolutely correct. I thought this was Webb’s best practice since I had seen him work in that rookie camp several weeks ago.

Slight positive mention by Broaddus 6/12/13
  • A player that didn’t start off the camp practices well but really picked it up the last couple of weeks was cornerback Sterling Moore. I found myself focusing more in guys like Carr, Claiborne, Scandrick and Webb but Moore has done a much better job of being in position to make plays where earlier, he was even in the same area code on these routes. There were too many times where he was turned and you could clearly see separation but in some practices last week and the three day camp this week, his technique was much tighter and his positioning on routes made it difficult for the quarterbacks to fit the ball inside on him. Earlier he was playing with poor foot quickness and he appeared to be slow reacting but this week he was on more balls and his game was overall better. Where Moore can help this team is when he has to play on the edge making sure that the ball goes inside to the linebackers and safeties. He understands how to play off blocks with his hand use and he does tackle well enough to keep plays from turning into large gains. Moore has been working opposite of Orlando Scandrick with the second defense on the left side and in the way the defensive coaches are playing him, he is the fourth corner ahead of B.W. Webb, who also had a nice three days. Earlier in the camp, I had big concerns in the way that Moore was playing but he now appears to have found himself again and will be ready for any role required of him.

Nick Eatman picked him as best rookie in OTAs - only one though
Best Rookie Of Offseason:

Nick – Lots of good players to choose from but I’ll stick with the first guy who caught my eye – B.W. Webb. I really think he’s going to play a lot this year. Not more than Travis Frederick, who should start. But Webb will play a lot in the nickel and special teams. I truly think he’s going to be a very, very good player for this team.

Don't ever rely on Eatman.
