Minnesota would give up draft pick to land quarterback

By JOHN MCCLAIN Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle

Feb. 23, 2009, 11:48AM

The Texans and Minnesota are close to completing a trade that would send quarterback Sage Rosenfels to the Vikings for a draft choice.

The Texans had no comment on the report.

This is the second year in a row in which the Vikings have been interested in acquiring Rosenfels as their starting quarterback. Rosenfels, who won six games in the last two seasons when replacing the injured Matt Schaub, is approaching the last year of his contract.

The Vikings have Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte on their roster. Jackson is a former second-round pick and Frerotte is a 14-year veteran.

Rosenfels, who grew up in Iowa and played at Iowa State, was hoping to be traded to the Vikings last year. Media reports said Minnesota offered a third-round draft choice, but the Texans wanted a second-round pick. Both teams denied an offer was made. The reason Rosenfels wants to be traded to the Vikings is that he would have a chance to start for a team that has Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor at running back and as has led the NFL in run defense for the last two years.

The additional undisclosed draft choice would give the Texans eight selections in the draft on April 25-26.

So Childress wasted the Vikings' 2008 season over a 2nd round pick instead of a 3rd rounder?

Well, at least he seems to be realizing his mistake...

Until the 4th quarter anyway.

Then Rosenfels usually goes into business for the other team!

But seriously, if the Viking could get a decent receiver, they might be dangerous.

Marvin Harrison's about to get cut loose.

They should make a play for him.

Rosenfels is intriguing. I've always kind of liked him, but he had some horrible moments in relief of Schaub this past season. He'd still be an upgrade in Minnesota though, and he seems like a guy who can really put up some numbers.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I don't think Rosenfels makes them any more dangerous than they were with Gus Frerotte at QB.

He had Andre Johnson in Houston and that didn't make him an All Pro. As you said, he'd find ways to lose. He has the ability to put up the statistics but seems to go skittish at the worst times.

It never ceases to amaze me that a coach like Childress who is supposed to know QBs can't seem to buy a clue about them. Tarvaris Jackson was a horrible choice as a developmental QB and Rosenfels is a stop gap at best. What's amusing is that they will continue on after they acquire him thinking the position is solved.

Only up to the point where Childress gets fired this year.

Is Childress GM too?

No, I think it's the knucklehead who ran the Dolphins into the ground.

Spielman (sp?)

But I think Childress has planty of say over the quarterback position.

And he was wrongfully an adamant supporter of Tavaris Jackson - to the point of being arrogant about it.

For a guy who's never accomplished anything as a head coach, Childress is plenty arrogant.

If true, does this mean the Vikings are gettin' Schaub-ed by the Texans? New Verb for trading over valued backup QBs.

I think this potentially makes them slightly better than they were with Gus but not much, if any.

Why would anyone consider trading for him? He's a 4th quarter anchor that drags you down the drain.

Its a loose loose deal IMO Texans get weaker a postion that has become very necessary in todays NFL backup qb and Vikings don't really get that much better and lose a pick

A 4th round choice for your average veteran backup is not that bad. While they should have taken the third, they'll come out ahead regardless.

Part of Childress' secret plan:

Let Rosenfels throw the ball a bit for the first three quarters and then it's All-Peterson for quarter number 4!
