Texas QB McCoy reportedly will return for senior season

ESPN.com news services

Updated: October 22, 2008, 10:33 PM ET Texas might be able to announce "Heisman Trophy winner Colt McCoy" next season.
The front-runner for the award told the Sporting News on Wednesday that he will return for his senior season.

"I'm going to play here for four years," McCoy said, according to the Web site. "I've been blessed to be able to play here. Not very many people get to [start] here for four years, so what an opportunity. And if the NFL is there for me, then I hope that I'll get to keep playing, because I love to play this game. Hopefully, it will work out."

McCoy completed a team-record 90.6 percent of his passes for 337 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday as the No. 1 Longhorns beat then No. 11 Missouri 56-31.

This season, McCoy has thrown for 1,894 yards and 19 touchdowns, with only three interceptions, for 7-0 Texas.

Despite wanting to stay at Texas all four years, McCoy feels he is on pace for an NFL career and sees himself in the mold of a pretty good signal-caller.

"I play a lot like Tony Romo," McCoy said, according to the Sporting News. "Maybe not as risky now, but he's a playmaker. He can make some yards with his feet, but he's also right on the money. He's accurate and he's smart with the ball."

I hope so. I don't think it is a given that Colt will make it as a pro QB and if you love the game and I'm sure he does then stay and enjoy the competition of playing game.

It is very good news. Colt McCoy deserves to make this work finished, and therefore it is a wise choice to take one more year in college, if you ask me.

I may be partly agree that nothing is taken for granted when it comes to hit the professional league and therefore it is probably a very wise and logical choice he has made. Im absolutely looking forward to see him wearing the jersey next season!

Go Longhorns!

If you look at what Colt is doing this year just imagine what he could do with another year under his belt

It's too early to buy into anything players say at this point. If I had a dollar for everytime a college athlete said he was gonna stay, but ended up declaring for the draft instead, I'd be a rich man.

That is of course true enough. Now you almost get's me closest to doubt again. It happens quite often as you said. Oh man, can't stand loosing Colt!

:hammer:

He could conceivably win the Heisman and the MNC.

If that happens, he'd be crazy not to enter the draft.

Most of those guys though are players expected to be first rounders. No matter what he does he may not be drafted that high.. And I believe he'll have a shot to break the all-time ncaa record for most wins by a qb. If he stays he'll have the chance to be a UT and NCAA legend and recordholder, if things keep going this well of course. And the NFL will still be there.

GREAT news, if you're a Horns fan...

And since the Cowboys don't have a first round pick this year, it's good news if you're a Horns/Cowboys fan who dreams of Colt someday taking over for Romo... :D

One thing working in Colt's favor is the fact that the kid is well grounded. So even if a smooth talking agent comes sniffing around, it will be a hard sell for him trying to convince Colt of foregoing his senior year and opt for the NFL draft. Another thing to consider (and I wish that I could put my hands on the article), but there was piece written about UT players and the treatment that they receive in Austin. It was a great piece of insight regarding how wonderful life is for them at UT. Roy Williams (who also stayed his four full years at UT) was one of the guys interviewed. He still maintains to this day that staying his senior year there was the best decision he's ever made. The difference for him between playing football at UT and the Detroit Lions was like night and day - when you consider the treatment he was getting from the fans of both teams.

If I can find it, I'll try to post the link here.

I wish I could say the same. I happen to live in ACC land unfortunately, and with the success the Longhorns are having this season, I decided to purchase ESPN's Game Plan just so I could watch this game today. Luckily, it was only half price being as the collge football season is half over.

McCoy is incredibly talented but I think Bradford is a more NFL ready QB right now.

If Bradford enters, I think McCoy will stay.

thats debatable. bradford is kinda thin, much like colt was last year, he would get destroyed with a good lick from someone like merriman or ware. as for bradford entering the draft this year, im 100 percent sure he wont! i guarantee you he wont enter the draft.

Why do you say that?

I know it's not likely that Bradford enters, but if Bradford stays AND McCoy stays, it will be good for college football but bad for McCoy.

Ridiculous. No effect on McCoy.
