Holy ****!

I hope it pays off. We are taking a chance. But why not if we have the money. He has a bigger ceiling than CJ, he just has to live up to it.

The movement on that guy's pitches is INSANE.

If he can adjust to pitching over here, he's going to be a good one.

Good for them. Not a Rangers fan, but I do root for them to do well since they're from Texas. They desperately need some quality pitches. Hopefully this guy lives up to the hype.

This seems like a very good move to me. I'm hopeful the guy turns out to be exactly what they're hoping for cause my Rangers should could use some improved overall pitching.

This. The movement he has is crazy and it has that movement with zip on the ball too!

Now, when I look at his fastball. It doesn't appear to be as live as say Ogando's, but I think it's the movement on his other pitches that makes his fastball so effective. They fear those other pitches and then he rockets a fastball down the pipe.

They say he has seven pitches too. He is a 25 year old CJ Wilson with better control.

If this kid can make the switch, the Rangers will have their ace for years to come. The thing I worry about most is the fact of how young he is and making this transition. Of course, the best thing about it is he didn't grow up in America. He probably has a better foundation to make the switch.

Go Rangers!

Found this on espndallas.com

Patrick Newman at NPBTracker.com. (Newman knows Japanese baseball) This is what he thinks of Darvish and his ability to make the switch.

Darvish's repertoire is diverse, with six distinct pitches that he throws with excellent movement. They are:

" 90-96 MPH 4-seam fastball
" 90-93 MPH 2-seam fastball which resembles a shuuto, a pitch throw by some Japanese right-handed pitchers that tends to break down and in against right-handed batters
" 90-92 MPH cutter
" 85-ish MPH horizontally breaking slider
" Low 80s downward-breaking slider, which Newman says looks more like a power curve
" 65-70 MPH curveball

Newman says the scouts he's talked to are bullish on Darvish as an MLB prospect because of that repertoire, his size (6-foot-5, 220 pounds) and athletic build, and his durability (40 complete games in his first four seasons in Japan, followed by a career-high 232 innings pitched in 2011.

The numbers are trickier to decipher. Analysts from Baseball Prospectus alum Clay Davenport to Jim Albright at BaseballGuru.com have gone to great lengths to make sense of Japanese league baseball, where a young star like Ichiro can carry his numbers to MLB fame, but an MLB washout like Tuffy Rhodes can also go on to hit 55 homers in a single season in Japan. Both Albright and FanGraphs' Eno Sarris recently took stabs at projecting Darvish's projection in the majors. Darvish's monstrous strikeout (10.7 strikeouts per 9 innings in 2011) and groundball (57% in 2011) rates, along with a microscopic walk rate (less than one and a half walks per 9 innings in 2011) would seem to bode well for big league success, especially for a 25-year-old pitcher who should be coming into his prime.

But we don't know. In the majors, Darvish will throw a different ball off a different mound to different hitters while playing in different stadiums. He'll throw fewer innings per start but pitch in a five-man rotation instead of six-. The comparisons to Daisuke Matsuzaka, Hideo Nomo, Kei Igawa, Kaz Ishii, and Hideki Irabu are ill-founded, given Darvish's superior combination of size, athleticism, track record and youth. But still, we don't know. Not for sure anyway.

Agreed... he is either going to be feast or famine...

Major League hitters will either figure him out early or be totally dumbfounded...

Let's hope for the latter...

I think the Rangers already know what it will take to sign him.

They are saying the contract will be between $54 and $77M depending on years. From what I heard he makes about $12M a year now between his baseball contract ($6M) and endorsements ($6M) So, $77M / 6 years = $12.8M / year sounds about right unless the Rangers go with 5 years around $60-$64M. Rangers don't like long pitching contracts, so I'm betting it's a 5 year deal. I can't imagine they would go any shorter after posting an almost $52M bid.

Darvish said he wants to pitch in the MLB this season.

Can someone explain how the $51.7 million bid works? Is this a guaranteed minimum salary he would make or a fee paid to someone else?

It would be a fee we pay to his current team if we sign him.

You nailed it.

The off-season confusion makes much more sense now. Darvish is much younger too.
Next up...Cecil Fielder!

Geez, that's a lot of scratch! I guess that gets taken into consideration with how much they pay him, meaning surely they won't pay him as high as an American free agent and then pay that fee on top?

I'm not a big fan of getting the star pitchers from over seas.

Daisuke had about one and a half good seasons.
Kawakami for the braves was a complete disaster.
Hideo Nomo had a decent career.
Chan Ho Park was up and down.

Well, the Rangers do. Not the player. I believe he makes about $12M a year in Japan. $6M salary and $6M endorsements. So, the Rangers will have to at least match that I'm sure. Expect about 5 year $60M or 6 year %75M. I'm leaning towards a 5 year deal. The Rangers don't like long term contracts for pitchers.

If Darvish approaches what we expect the pitching staff will be deeper and better than before with Nathan taking over as closer and Feldman healthy and in the mix, and Holland, Harrison & Ogando benefitting from the experience gained last season.

Feliz is going to be interesting. I frankly can't see Feliz and Ogando both in the rotation. My guess is they will move Ogando to the bullpen and try Feliz as a starter. I can't see them demoting Feliz from closer to bullpen arm.

How the rotation shakes out will be interesting. Between Darvish, Lewis, Holland, Harrison, Ogando, Feliz and Feldman there potentially are 7 people who might be considered. Darvish, Lewis and Holland are locks, and at least one of either Feliz or Ogandu is a lock, which leaves a possible 3 man competition for the 5th spot. My bet would be on Feliz and Harrison filling the final 2 spots with Feldman and Ogando going to the bullpen.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a starter get traded. Neil Rameriz is close to being ready to come up, so he could be waiting in the wings if needed.
