Rangers have traded Millwood to Baltimore in a salary dump for RP Chris Ray.

They are on the verge of inking Rich Harden to a 7.5 million deal w/ a 2nd year option.

Also on the verge of trading Max Ramirez to Boston for Mike Lowell to DH and play corner infield - with Boston picking up most the salary.

Pretty eventful winter meetings so far!!

Wow, we traded Millwood! I usually keep up with all Rangers news, but I missed this. Interesting...

If only we can now solidify the ownership situation and use his salary to pick up some good players.

Well the Lowell deal is pretty much set.

So basically it worked out

Millwood
Max

for

Harden (legit #1)
Ray (setup guy - 2nd year from Tommy John = back to old self)
Lowell (great clubhouse guy, playoff vet who mashes leftys)

Not a bad way to cut payroll, if you have to cut payroll. The Ranger's cash commitments are at $33M now, which will go up to $50M-$55M or so after all their arbitration stuff.

They were at $68M last year.

My winter meetings wishlist:

Trade Millwood's Salary (check)
Sign Rich Harden (check)
Sign Ben Sheets
Sign Vlad Guerrero

I think the last two would be the icing on the cake.
Texas Rangers 2010 AL West Champions
Get it done JD

Selig won't approve the increase in payroll that would require. They have about $3.5 million to use right now to use...

As a devoted Orioles fan, trust me when I say he's nowhere near back to his old self... and if he was, the Rangers wouldn't be looking at him as a setup man, they'd be slotting him to be their closer... when healthy, he was damn near unhittable, which leads me to believe the Orioles don't believe he's going to get back to that level...

Well this will be the 2nd year back from TMJS - and "experts" say thats when the arm is back to normal.

Who knows - but you guys got a good innings eater in Millwood and he should be able to mentor some of the young arms you have.

Now, if we can just get a decent, right handed hitting third baseman with some power, and a decent, right handed hitting first baseman with some power, and a good closer, we might actually be mediocre!!!

:D

The new ownership group is lead by one of the best guys in baseball, Chuck Greenberg. Within five years he'll be known as one of the best owners. Very hands on in that he wants the fans to have the best experience posssible and evaluates each hire personally but very hands off in that when he has baseball people in place, he lets them do their jobs.
