AUSTIN -- A Texas senator wants to ban the state's college football teams from playing in any postseason championship games that are not part of a playoff system.

The bill by Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, is similar to a bill filed in the House last month by Rep. Rep. Corbin Van Arsdale, R-Tomball.

Both bills would expire Dec. 2, just before Bowl Championship Series bids go out, if a similar law is not enacted in at least four other states.

Both are mostly symbolic measures born out of the frustration with the BCS system, in which a poll of college football coaches and computer rankings help determine which teams will play in the major bowl games.

The Associated Press has instructed the BCS to stop using the AP Top 25 rankings by sportswriters and broadcasters as part of the selection formula.

The University of Texas received its first BCS bid this past season when it was invited to the Rose Bowl. The Longhorns beat Michigan 38-37.

Wentworth's bill would prohibit Texas' NCAA teams from playing in "an intercollegiate post-regular-session competition that is part of a series that includes a national championship game unless that competition is part of a national playoff system."

That system would have to consist of "at least 16 teams competing in successive elimination games resulting in a final game for the national championship of that entire division or level of intercollegiate competition."

If at least four other states enact a similar law before Dec. 1, the law would stay in effect for Texas schools, according to the bill.

:clap2:

I am tired of these money-grubbing college presidents... there is absolutely NO reason a playoff system is not in place...

USC won the national championship while Auburn and Utah beat all comers... something has to give...

Kudos to the greatest state in the union attempting to put their collective big darn foot down!

Amen.

This needs to happen to because it seems to be the only way to implement a playoff system.

Regardless of whether it is right or wrong, government has no business in this area.

Move along legislators...nothing for you to stick your noses into here.

I got a better Idea have these senators keep Texas great and pass the 3% appraisal cap on our house. You need to call your local state rep and senator and lay into them in the Dallas area. Your appraisal goes up an average of about 10% per year which is a hidden property tax increase. So they do not raise taxes because they just raise the property value 10% every year on your house which is just a hidden 10% tax raise every year. The senators/reps need to address the more important things like giving money back to homeowners not the stupid bowl system.

Dallas it is your reps putting up the front on the appraisal cap of 3% you need to call them and if you are not aware of it you better be you are going to be taxed out of your home. In fact in houston we forced several city mayors and reps to change there toon by calling we have forced there hand it is now your turn. Sorry this pisses me off when they do crap like this but will not give back citizens their money. They jost rob u blind.

This is not just a Dallas issue by the way this is state wide( every rep in elpaso area is against the 3% cap).

Rant off

Actually they do... I am assuming it is state supported schools... state govenments regulate educational institutions all the time as they give them loads of cash...

I assume schools like Rice and Baylor would be exempt... (not that they will ever get an invite... ;) )
