Texas to sign 15-year deal with Nike, richest in college sports
In July, [URL='http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-football/25241853/michigan-nike-contract-worth-169-million-richest-in-college-sports']Michigan announced its new $169 million apparel contract with Nike, the richest in college sports. But only three months later, it appears the Swoosh is poised to make another school an even richer offer.
The Austin American-Statesman reported Wednesday that "University of Texas officials have reached a 15-year agreement with Nike in what is expected to be the richest shoe and apparel deal in college sports," with the contract still requiring final approval from the UT System Board of Regents.
The report comes as no surprise. Texas has been expected to re-up with its longtime apparel partners at Nike, who the American-Statesman reports had the right to match any offer made by a competitor (such as fast-rising, cash-splashing Under Armour). And with Texas "the No. 1 seller of T-shirts, hats and other merchandise for nine straight years, according to the Collegiate Licensing Company rankings," Nike's incentive to keep the Longhorns in the fold was obvious.
