[/SIZE] AUSTIN – The pain kept reminding Limas Sweed that all was not well in his left wrist.
After six games, the senior receiver decided he couldn't continue any longer with the injury he suffered during preseason drills.
Sweed, the sixth-leading receiver in Texas history, will undergo season-ending surgery to repair ligament damage in the wrist, the school announced Monday.
Texas, which has started 0-2 in the Big 12 South, loses a player who commanded double coverage despite the injury. Sweed averaged 33.3 yards on his 20 career touchdowns. Last season, he tied Roy Williams' school record with touchdown catches in seven consecutive games.

"I knew it was an injury I would be dealing with going into the season, and I did everything I could to play through the pain and help the team," Sweed said in a statement released by the university. "I've aggravated it a couple of times and again last week and have probably been in more pain than I let anybody know."
With Sweed limited to 19 catches this season, Nate Jones (36 receptions) and Quan Cosby (31 receptions) have taken on bigger offensive roles. Tight end Jermichael Finley could be an emerging playmaker, with four catches for 149 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's loss to Oklahoma.
Billy Pittman, who missed the first three games with a suspension, and Jordan Shipley have been in the receiver rotation. Freshmen Brandon Collins and James Kirkendoll might also move up.
But Sweed's loss will be felt, even though he will remain with the team following the surgery, coach Mack Brown said.
"We've been very fortunate to have Limas for the past four years," Brown said in a statement. "He's made a lot of great plays and had a record-setting career at Texas."
The surgery will help Sweed recover in time for the NFL draft, Brown said.
Sweed was considered a possible first-day draft pick before deciding to return to Texas for his senior year.
Even before the announcement late Monday afternoon, offensive coordinator Greg Davis noted Sweed's struggles.
The injury caused Sweed to miss the final two offensive series against Oklahoma. He finished with two receptions for 25 yards.
"I felt bad for Limas," Davis said. "He's trying to play hurt. A lot of times he gets caught in situations ... a lot of times it's the way he falls on the ground."
The decision to have surgery was made following further evaluation.
"Since the injury has become more symptomatic and limiting, it has led us to recommend that he undergo surgery to repair it," team physician Dr. Carey Windler said in a statement.

Limas Sweed's year-by-year statistics at Texas:
Year G Rec. Yds. Avg. TD
2004 11 23 263 11.4 0
2005 13 36 545 15.1 5
2006 13 46 801 17.4 12
2007 6 19 306 16.1 3
Career 43 124 1,915 15.4 20

Well this sucks, but at least now Rack can find another anti-bandwagon to hop on.

It sucks for the Horns and for Sweed, the lad's gonna drop in the draft... where he was once a near sure-fire first round pick, I could see him dropping to late the first day...

Which might work out well for the Cowboys... I like the kid, he's got some game... :D

The biggest knock on him is he runs "sloppy" routes at times. For example, on UT's 2nd or 3rd possession Sat, he's running a post that he cut off 8-10 yards short. McCoy had him easily, and Sweed had the DB beaten. But the pass went where Sweed was supposed to be, and it made it look like McCoy missed him badly, which he didn't.

I'd gladly take him, but I'd be worried about anything higher than an early 2nd rounder.

maybe that is why he was having so much trouble catching passes....i guess he has little to no strength in that hand cause of the bad wrist.....and here i was being so hard on him. well if he gets that wrist fixed and comes back healthy, he may end up being a steal in the draft next year, as he will most likely fall due to his poor production this year and the injury.

I doubt he would fall to the second day, but if he did, I would definitely trade up to grab him right away. while i wouldnt use a 1st or 2nd on him (this was before i knew he was playing with that bad wrist and i saw him drop everything in sight) i would most definitely spend a 4th on him.

Uhhhh, he can't come back, his college career is over... this was his senior year, and he's played too many games to get a medical redshirt...

Yep, only OU quarterbacks get to play 7 or 8 years.

True, so true.

I wouldn't mind taking a shot at Sweed in the 6th or 7th round. He's got size and solid speed, but he just isn't that good. Maybe with some coaching he could put those talents to use.

I thought Roy Williams would be a bust cuz he didn't really run many routes at Texas. It says A LOT about Texas offensive coaches when even the Lions can make a player out of you.

What? I am not sure I follow. Do you really think the Lions were working with nothing when they got Roy Williams? He was a player in college and is a player in the NFL.

Roy was a good all around receiver at Texas. He ran quite a few outs, slants, posts and deep gos. He seemed to do a lot more in the passing game than Sweed. I rarely see Sweed do anything other than go routes and an occasional deep post. I dont' think there is much to work with in him unlike Roy Williams.

Some of that may also be due to the QB and current system. Roy played in more of a pro-style offense while at Texas except for his last year when Vince Young took over. Chris Simms for all his faults could make all the throws that you would expect from a pro-style QB. Plus they had Benson and a full back much of the time.

Sweed is playing with Colt who really can't make all the throws. His arm isn't bad like Chad Pennington, but it isn't what I would call strong, either. The offense has to be tailored for the throws he can make. You can't expect him to take a 7 step drop and then rip off a deep out on a rope. Simms could make that kind of throw.

If Sweed is available in the 6th or 7th, I would not complain. I don't think he is worthy of a first day pick, but someone will get him. Roy was very worthy of his draft position. I thought so back then as well for both he and Larry Fitzgerald.
