Independence Bowl: Air Force vs Georgia Tech
27

Dec

It’s the 1970’s all over again in this years Independence Bowl. Only three teams still run the triple option. Two of them Air Force and Georgia Tech will be playing in this game. These two teams rank first and second in rushing yards per game nationally so this game could be the shortest bowl game in the last 30 years.
3 Keys from the Scouts

1. Who will play on Georgia Tech’s defense? The Yellow Jackets have suspended 7 players for all or part of this game. 6 of those players are defensive starters or contributors. Defending the triple option successfully requires very disciplined team defense. With so many new faces playing one wonders if Al Groh’s guys can pull it off.

2. Which team will pass more efficiently. There will be passes thrown in this game, though only a few. The team that is more efficient will almost certainly be the victor. Tevin Campbell will be without his favorite target Stephen Hill due to unspecified team violations. Due to that suspension the advantage here goes to Air Force.

3. Air Force’s special teams aren’t really all that special. 5 of 10 on the year in field goal opportunities. Georgia Tech will be one of the more talented defenses that Air Force has played. The should be able to stop some drives and force the Falcons into more field goal opportunities then they are used to.

Georgia Tech

Round Full Name Pos Num Yr Comments
5th Anthony Allen RB 18 5Sr Strong, north/south runner that’s significantly improved his game over the past two seasons.
6th Brad Jefferson OLB 51 4Sr Fierce linebacker that chases the action hard and makes a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage.
6-7 Mario Butler CB 2 4Sr Highly rated cornerback that does not live up to the reputation. Offers terrific size yet does not show the natural ball skills.
7th Mario Edwards S 33 5Sr Aggressive run defender best up the field.
FA Anthony Egbuniwe DE 41 5Sr Average college pass rusher that never elevated his game.
FA Dominique Reese CB 26 5Sr

Air Force (8-4) versus Georgia Tech (6-6): INDEPENDENCE BOWL; Shreveport, LA; 5:00 PM ET; ESPN2

College football fans yearning for a good old time game featuring plenty of running the ball should get their fill in today's Independence Bowl match-up between Georgia Tech and Air Force which were 1-2 nationally in rushing this fall. That said the best prospects for the 2011 draft on both teams are CBs. Mario Butler (#2, 511, 185) of Georgia Tech, for example, is a middle round prospect for the upcoming draft who has already been invited to next month's East-West Shrine All-star game. Meanwhile, Reggie Rembert (#8, 5-8, 185) just maybe Air Force's best prospect this decade, although that's no guarantee of ultimately being selected as no former Falcons' player has been drafted since 1999. Back to basics, Georgia Tech has a solid second-tier RB in Anthony Allen (#18, 511, 240), a powerful inside runner who rushed for almost 1,300 yards this season. Meanwhile, C Sean Bedford (#79, 6-1, 285), who anchors the Yellow Jackets' offensive line, is smart, quick and athletic, but isn't overly big. Other Yellow Jackets to watch include OLB Anthony Egbuniwe (#41, 6-3, 260), MLB Brad Jefferson (#51, 6-1, 245), CB Dominique Reese (#26, 5-11, 215) and SS Mario Edwards (#33, 6-0, 215).
