Not much has changed. Lights go out and people get looted. I guess some things will never change....

Indeed once electricity stopped for a while everything we have will collapse and savagery will take over similar or worse than a Mad Max environment .
All the talk you hear everyday that we are advancing just total BS.

There have been a number of blackouts in other places since and the same thing happened there each time.

It is sad indeed I think good number of people are good but you only test that goodness when you have a crises not when everything is ok.
you remember Katrina in New Orleans .
I think what will help if we to return to the family base system as a start and build from there.

Northeast blackout of 2003

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_blackout_of_2003

We had our own blackout here in Ontario back in 2003, no looting, most folks I talked to enjoyed 2 things about the blackout, the quietness and the darkness at night. Personally I loved it...

My hydro was out for almost 2 days, some people were without hydro longer, some got theirs back sooner. I was luck in a way, my car was just about to go in for service and was going to be hoisted...this particular garage had 3 cars that were on hoist and no emergency releases to get cars down in case of a loss of power.

let's say that last for a month or 3 you bet people will change ( not all for sure).
Once people out of their comfort zone, impulse will kick in.

I agree I would want more than a few days, it was just nice for a couple of days...:)
you feel time is slowing down for sure once you have no electricity .We should have no electricity weekend once a year let people slow down and enjoy lol.

But you know big business won't like the idea, also people will start to think and that would make some uncomfortable .

We had a major Ice storm about 10 years ago. Power was off for over a week in the majority of the state.
No mass lootings.

5 years ago, and man we got lucky in planning the dates for a vacation to the Virgin Islands, had a powerful storm full of derechos that caused almost week long power outage in a summer that was in the 90's-100's (much nicer in the islands).
No Mass lootings.

Just don't hear much about that kind of thing in Rural areas.

Because inner city feels like they should be given free stuff.

And when this happens they take it.

The worst part of the black out was the fall out that's been going on ever since. We had a change of provincial government, and the newly elected liberal government was blaming Ontario's electrical grid, even though the black-out originated from Ohio (our electrical grid in Ontario is interconnected with some US states). In the end blaming Ontario's electrical grid was used as an excuse to implement a green energy policy that have driven hydro through the roof for many Ontario resident's (mainly rural or those that heat with hydro), with many people easily paying $400-$500 a month...sadly that's what comes from politicians who govern based on ideology, instead of common sense.
