Personnel breakdown

It’s a short week for us too. So with access every day, we’re going to make like the players and put Washington behind us quicker than the opponent during a normal week, and give you all we got here tonight. We’re gonna have this look at the personnel grouping, followed by our rush analysis, and Tale of the Tape in succession.

Here’s how the Cowboys rolled players out for their 58 offensive snaps Sunday:

1 RB/2 TE/2 WR (‘12’ personnel): 21 of 58 snaps (11 first half/10 second half)
2 RB/1 TE/2 WR (‘21’ personnel): 18 of 58 snaps (9/9)
1 RB/1 TE/3 WR (‘11’ personnel): 14 of 58 snaps (9/5)
2 RB/2 TE/1 WR (‘22’ personnel): 3 of 58 snaps (0/3)
0 RB/1 TE/4 WR (‘01’ personnel): 1 of 58 snaps (1/0)
0 RB/2 TE/3 WR (‘02’ personnel): 1 of 58 snaps (1/0)

WHAT IT MEANT: It means the Cowboys were in relatively manageable situations all game long, and it also meant, in this case, that Dallas was using personnel it could throw to over the middle of the field. Consider that the Cowboys were in ‘21’ or ‘12’ on 39 snaps, and that tells the story. With the Commanders heavy on Tampa-2, the Cowboys worked the ball underneath, and used the tight ends to occupy the key man in the coverage, middle linebacker London Fletcher. We’ll have more on that in bit in the Tale, because it really helped to spring big plays late.

Week in and week out the numbers on our personnel formations show that we use 2-TE formations about half of our offensive snaps.

There was a good amount of talk in the off-season about Fasano being a wasted pick. After all, he's just a backup, right?

Please, someone tell me how spending a 2nd round pick on a position that is on the field half of the offensive snaps is a waste.

I like the 1 RB/2 TE set because, theoretically, you can run or throw effectively from it.

I like Fasano, and he's a good #2 TE, but that doesn't make him a value in the 2nd round. :/

I think people were hoping he'd get the ball more. However, he's probably pretty low on the totem pole when it comes to reading the defense. That's mainly because we have a lot more explosive people out there who appear to be getting open on a regular basis.

I wish we would have drafted Leonard Pope. He's a taller, more athletic target than Fasano and would compliment Witten well. Fasano is just a poor man's, poor man's Witten.
