We're in season 9 of the 2 Tight End offense, and still don't see any evidence that it will work in this year's version. Parcells brought this novel offense with him when he came to the Cowboys, signing Campbell and drafting Witten. The offense never gained much traction, be it because of Quincy, lack of talent or whatever other reason. Campbell injured his foot and Parcells used a 2nd round draft pick on Fasano. He was't much of a blocker, and the majority of the passes for the tight ends weretaken by Witten. Not much of a positive impact during these years.
So the Cowboys decide to gift the Dolphins Fasano and Ayodele for a 4th round draft choice and select Marty B., who is finally the big blocking TE needed to run this offense. Bennet gets here, not many passes thrown his way and the offense is not much of what the 2 TE sets are suppose to be. Get rid of Bennett and let Phillips give it a shot for a year, same bad results, Phillips is not the blocker Bennett was.
So the Cowboys use another 2nd round draft pick on a TE who is known as much for his inability to block as he is for his pass catching. Now this offense has no effective blocking TE, yet the Cowboys are going with the 2 TE offense, as their base offense. The OL is not and has not been known for their run blocking, and now you throw in some weak blocking from their TEs. By running this offense, you are bringing in the defense in tight, making it easier to clog any running lanes. Furthermore, the pass catching TEs are running 2 yard pass patterns.
So is there any wonder why this team has a hard time running the ball? Where are the promised mismatches the two TEs bring? I finally got a chance to watch yesterday's game, there were 4 passes thrown towards the middle of the field. Isn't this where the mismatches are suppose to be?
Over the past 3-4 years, the best success this team has had on offense is running the 3 WR sets. It also spreads out the defense and has a better shot of running the ball. It is beyond belief how this organization keeps banging their heads against the wall, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. The two TE offense has not worked, and is not working now.
