In 2006, the Cowboys have the best.....
QB - Since Troy Aikman in 1999? Probably the last year I thought Aikman could still pull it together through all the beating he had taken. If he gets protection, Bledsoe is better than anything we've brought in to replace Aikman, and even reminds me of Troy in some ways.
RB - Since Emmitt Smith in 2000? Even though he had a disappointing sophomore year, Julius is still much better than "What is running back?" Emmitt was already falling before 2000 but that was the last year he could still pull out more than 4 yards a carry.
TE - Since Jay Novacek in 1995? If he avoids injuries, Witten is going to go down as the best tight end in Cowboys history.
WR - Since Michael Irvin in 1999? His last year that was cut short before injuries. TO is the franchise receiver we've lacked since Irvin. He's better than Rocket, Galloway, Keyshawn, Glenn and the many talented receivers we've brought in since that have been productive but just never demanded the attention from defenses, nor been the all-around threat, that Michael Irvin used to be.
DE/LB/PASS RUSHER - Since Charles Haley in 1995. DeMarcus Ware is the first legit pass rusher we've had in Big D since Haley before the back injuries were too much.
DE - Since Tony Tolbert and Charles Haley in 1995? Different responsibilities, 4-3 and 3-4, but we've gone through so many wasted draft picks on the line since then that I'm thrilled with Chris Canty and Marcus Spears. Ferguson is a different story but he's the best pure nose we've had in a few years.
CB - Since 1995 in what should have been with Kevin Smith & Deion Sanders? I'm taking this one for the truth because I heard Jerry say the same thing in an interview when asked about Anthony Henry. As far as the trio at corner, I think you have to go back to the late 60's or early 70's when Cornell Green, Mel Renfro, Charlie Waters, Herb Adderley and others were moved in and out as our defensive backs.
SS - Since Darren Woodson in maybe 2001? The last year before he started having big problems with injuries, slow down and other pesky age-related problems?
What do you say? What would be your guesses? Would you say Bradie James has the potential to be our best inside linebacker since Ken Norton in the early 90's?
I have to say, I'm VERY disappointed I still can't say anything positive about the offensive line. Larry, Marco and Mooch's leftover are still nothing compared to the last 15 years of interior linemen. Johnson is nowhere near Stepnoski or even old man Donaldson's level. Who knows what Fabini will bring. I think we had the same level of optimism when Ryan Young was signed. The only constant is our left tackle and even Flozell showed signs of slipping recently.
