Don't worry, I'm looking forward to seeing how things play out this year. Dallas has a real shot to make a run.

But I ALWAYS look ahead with my favorite teams (college and pro). This offseason will be very interesting for Dallas. Key free agents include:

Offense: L. Robinson, Holland, Bennett, Kitna
Defense: Spencer, Elam, Sensabaugh, Ball
ST's: McBriar (I assume Bailey will be retained)

The first question is, who does Dallas retain and how expensive will they be? by Adam's numbers, Dallas has around $20 Mil of cap space to work with, give or take after the draft and Brooking and Kitna's contracts are voided.

The only offensive player I'd like to see Dallas retain is Robinson as the #3 WR. Romo seems to like him and I doubt he breaks the Bank. Mcgee probably steps in as the backup QB. Phillips is around as the #2 TE and Dallas will need to find another for depth. I wouldn't mind Holland being around for depth, but I hope Dallas upgrades the inerior OL this offseason (as we all do). I think we'd all agree Dallas is 1-2 interior OL away from being nearly unstopable on offense.

The big questions are on defense. Obviously Ryan is a big key. Hope he's around another year. The key FA's are Spencer, Elam and Sensabaugh. I imagine these positions have to be filled by re-signing these guys, high draft choices or other FA's. I didn't realize Elam was 30. I would rather commmit to Sensy (28) long term if given the choice. With Spencer it all comes down to the price. He's a good (albeit not great) player IMO.

Hopefully McBriar comes back as well. Thoughts?

I agree with Robinson. He's a must sign and I'm sure Tony will request it.

That blubber pot Holland is finally starting to play like his livelihood depends on it, he's been very key to our recent success on the ground.

I'd probably re-sign Holland, Sensabaugh, Elam and Ball.

I would let Spencer walk and see if we can upgrade the position in FA or draft.

If we decide to re-sign Spencer, we need to sign a pass rusher because he isn't generating enough pressure in the nickel. I don't think he is worth breaking the bank. He is not an elite player at OLB. He is mediocre in coverage and mediocre as a pass rusher.

i'll be the guy to say it. If ball is willing to sign for the vet minimum, he plays pretty solid CB in our dime. Not afraid to stick his nose in there and tackle a RB who is going to bowl him over.

I'd keep Robinson, Sensy, Elam, Ball and Mcbriar
I think Spencer goes and gets a Chris Canty contract and I''m worried what happens when Holland isn't playing for his job (guaranteed contract of any kind)

Laurent Robinson may be pricing himself out of our league with his play this year, considering we would be trying to sign him as a #3.

Agreed - but why not Robinson?

this......i think someone will give up some coin to make him a number 2 or maybe 1. We might not give up that much for a number 3.

I don't know. Today on ESPN he said he's glad to finally have landed on this team and catching balls from Romo. I know money is king but if it's close, I think he'll stay here.

I can't imagine Robinson getting more than a Crayton type of contract, which I would think Dallas would have to do if need be. Maybe a bit more, but not much. He's an important re-sign.

If either Elam or Sensy could be secured for another short term deal, then do it by all means. A long term deal to either scares me a bit. Would like to see them prove it another year, but at least one has got to be retained.

I'm fine with Holland on another one year deal, but that's it. An interior OL has got to be selected in the first two rounds. Let Holland compete with the rookie for his job. I also agree if Ball is available for the league minimum, sign him. I just wouldn't give him any guaranteed $$$$.

This is the FB's 2nd year in the league. Why did Carolina let that guy go?

Our gain obviously. But he'll come at a reasonable cost a couple more years.

Yes, obviously to Robinson. I forgot about him because I've been harping about extending this guy for about 3 weeks now.

Robinson's deal should be extended during the season. I would say the same is true for Elam and Sensabaugh. There is no point to having constant roster turnover. None of these guys are stars but they are all good vets well into their careers and you need players like that to have a successful team. Jerry has this dumb habit of letting everyone hit FA and then getting into bidding wars.

Try to identify solid vets to you want to sign to league average contracts. Sign them and you have security for your roster and they have security about future paychecks. I don't think they like constantly having to prove themselves on 1-year deals. It adds lots of stress to their lives when they should be focused just on playing football.

Ball is a very good #4 CB. He tackles very well. He can start without embarassing himself. He is a very good special teams player. We may be able to get a good discount on him because everyone remembers what a bad safety he was and it taints him. I don't think he had any bids in FA last year. The truth is that we can win games and play our base defense with Ball on the field. Given how often your fourth CB has to come on the field now it is an important position to shore up.

Bennett, Kitna, Spencer walk.

The rest stay, including the much maligned Alan Ball. He's a better CB than people give him credit for, and not only contributes on defense but on special teams as well. People need to just throw out the season he had at FS -- he's not a FS.

He's "the new Sam Hurd" as far as being a ST gunner, but he contributes a lot more on D than Hurd ever did on offense.

I like the idea of bringing back both safeties, but I'd use Elam for depth. I'd still love a ball-hawk back there.

I'll take stingy pass defense over a ball-hawk any day. The last time we did that (cutting Ken Hamlin) we went backwards.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Newman had 2 picks on Sunday. We've collected a lot of INTs this year.
