I have never been more frustrated and angry during a Cowboys game. Its never okay to lose, but its never accepable to lose to an inferior group because of your own lack of performance. I have never been ablle able to accept underachieving.
But then, fan is not rational thing. What is it that ties us so passionately to something we are not a part of? Why is that?
And in this I learn a hard realization for the second time, its time to step back. That rational thing called reality and life is there and my wife and kids deserve more than my angry atttude and broken things. Its the second time because, a few years ago I had to do this same thing from my other passion in sports, the Duke Blue Devils who seemed to exist to be great in the regular season and underachieve in March Madness. After year after year of this I had to pull back because my young kids and wife had to come first - and that holds true for the Cowboys now. No question, no quibble, family first.
Now I knew going into this playoffs the Cowboys were not going to win it all. They had to learn how to win the biggest of games. But, I never once thought they would wilt to an inferior team. I thought they got it after there time off. They did not. These are grown men - the players and coaches - and they should have learned the lesson before now. Now, hopefully several will learn a more painful one that when you don't perform, you lose the honor to do so.
I believe changes are needed both to the squad, but more so to the staff.
1. Anyone that wants Sparano, please take him. His passionate speech today was a cool visual, but where was one change in scheme or protection to actually accomplish something? You have opportunities aplenty in the secondary, find a way to make it happen.
2. Anyone that wants Stewart or Todd Bowles, please take them as well. Mr. Bowles seems to be a rising hot property for some reason. I don't know why. Maybe he will go to Miami as well. He'll fit in well there. You play to win the game, not to not lose it. Make them win the game. The offense has to shoulder alot of this defeat, but the super softness that allowed the Giants touchdown going into halftime and the usual poor tackling lost this game. Making them dink and dunk to victory is not a challenging football proposition when you provide a 10 yard cushion. Play defense, hit somebody in the mouth, make them beat you. This attitude and philosophy is set by Stewart as much as Bowles and this attitude is one of weakness and fear of failure. A champion doesn't play with weakness or fear.
3. Bruce Read either needs get to go as well. He relies on a few players to do something instead of being able to plan for the whole to succeed. The unit covers not just Davis and Carpenter. You need one ace returner, not a rotation of 2, 3, or 4. Austin returns, everybody else blocks. Is that that hard?
4. Wherever Reeves is officially on the depth chart, he has to be atleast 2 slots back when September arrives next year.
5. Mr. Crayton got paid. Now, someone arrange for him to buy a juggs machine for his new backyard!
6. Someone see how we can get Romo some rosin or pine tar from the Astros to keep in his pouch.
7. Gurode either needs to get past his psychological issues with in game snapping or we have to replace him.
8. Romo has more more step to take - its always patience first. You take as much as that is given or you are able to take provided your protection - and now you have to let the recievers coaches and line coaches know what you are comfortable with and what you feel they should do so that things can happen. The routes and combinations there of, sucked nearly as bad as the protection of the line in the second half.
9. Now for Wade. I just don't know. Great guy. Great with the players. But the team attitude was soft, not aggressive. Is that on him? I just down know. I lean toward this dream scenario. Keep Wade, pay off Garrett to stay one more year till ascending to head coach after Wade wins some playoff games next year, and bring in Singletary as defensive coordinator to inspire passion and aggression in the guys. We then move forward into destiny with Garret and Singletary for years.
10. Keep it real guys. Be a fan, but be a father or wife, brother or sister, first. The Cowboys are your second family. Remember that.
