Oh yeah, hopefully that pushes DC to make a Justice League Movie. It would have to be after the Flash movie though.
The Green Lantern was horrible.
Marvel created
The Avengers the right way according to the book's storyline--albeit with a few tweaks. Each character of the book's founding members--Iron Man, Thor and Hulk--had their own movie which preceded
The Avengers film. Captain America's was not a founding member of the group, but his character is identified very strongly with The Avengers that his pre-movie made perfect sense.
The other founding members, Ant-Man and Wasp, were replaced in this film by the Black Widow and Hawkeye. They were also pre-introduced before
The Avengers movie in the
Iron Man and
Thor movies. The same goes for Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.
The formula works very well. All the individual characters bring the fans and core audiences which they attracted to their own films to the group movie. Add a decent plot (basically straight from Stan Lee's first issue), good writing, great special effects and presto: a blockbuster movie.
If DC wants similar results, they should proceed along the same path. That means the Justice League's founding members--Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Flash and/or Martian Manhunter--should be given movies which precede the group movie.
Batman is firmly established. The sad thing (in my personal opinion) is that Christian Bale will not be in it most likely.
Superman needs a serious reboot. The mid-2000's film shouldn't be counted for a tie-in into the JL movie. Luckily, DC will 'get it right' ( :crossed: )with
Man Of Steel debuting next year.
Green Lantern was alright. If they can re-cast the role and get rid of Ryan Reynolds (and Blake Lively), its sequels should do better.
That leaves Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash and/or Martian Manhunter getting their own movies--with Wonder Woman being an imperative. She, along with Superman and Batman, is one of the top three guns in the DC Universe. It is crazy stupid that her character has not graced the big screen during the last two decades.
Martian Manhunter could be a support character with a movie title like Black Widow and Hawkeye. I'm not so sure the same could be said of Flash and Aquaman. If I had to pick one of the two which a JL movie did not 'require' a character's movie to precede it, I would pick Aquaman. I'm not real sure how receptive audiences would be to a fish man.
: On the other hand, I think that a Flash movie (no pun intended), would be a pretty good hit with moviegoers.
All-in-all, I believe DC could achieve the same success with a group movie as Marvel has. They should lay out the groundwork first and that takes time. Of course, they could take the shortcut and make JL without doing the character recognition work first. I think that would do be shortsighted.
Then again, I just want DC to do ANYTHING proactive. Their characters have fictional traditions which are just as good as Marvel's. Why they haven't seriously tried to capitalize on them is a mystery to me.
