Now that its all signed and sealed with Greg Hardy and we have all had time to look at the deal, see the numbers involved and the structure of it let look at why i think it is a stroke of genious.
Forget about how it affects hardy for second, forget about how we only pay for what we get,for get about how it motivates the player.I want to look at how it affects the cowboys organisation.

Now JG has preached for a long time about multiplicity-a players ability to man different roles.Think mincey-playing across the dline, same with crawford.Think linebackers like hitchens or durant who can play will, mike or sam.
This deal gives the cowboys multiplicity.Yes its only a 1 year deal and yes many of us were dissapointed not to lock him for a few years whilst his bargaining chips were low.But do not fret about that.As it stands the cowboys have $39mill cap space in 2016.
Here is a list of the free agent we have that yet
Amobi Okoye
Mackenzy Bernadeau
Jeremy Mincey
Keith Rivers
Dekoda Watson
Greg Hardy
Josh Brent
Jed Collins
Brandon Weeden
James Hanna
Kyle Wilber
Morris Claiborne
Tyrone Crawford
Jack Crawford
Corey White
Jeff Heath
Darrion Weems
Ronald Leary
Keith Smith
The only significant names on there at present are Leary, crawford and obviously dez bryant once his tag expires.
Now the $39mill space in 2016 will come down to around $30mill if Hardy hits his escalators involved in his deal this year as they will be pushed into the 2016 cap.Which would be more than enough to sign the 3 major starters we will have hitting fa plus hardy should we wish to.
But here is where the Hardy deal gives us the multplicity in the fo as appossed to on the field like Jg so often preaches.
It blows the draft wide open for us.We can do what we want.We no longer have to reach for a 1st round pass rusher. We can see how the draft plays out and then have all year to use that to formulate a plan for 2016.
Say we go cb early and that guy earns a starting role-it means we can june 1st carr next year thus earning us an additional $8mill in cap space
Say we go pass rusher and he shows enough to make them think greg hardy can leave.
Maybe a guard falls into our lap in the early rounds to make leary expendable after 2015?that guard would end up being a cheaper cap hit than leary would likely want.
Similarly wth a rt?meaning we save money by cutting doug free after 2015?

The hardy deal whilst filling a massive need on the dline for 2015 also opens up endless possibilitys for this time next year.It also gives us an up close and personal look into what hardy is like as a team mate before we have to decide to invest a butt load of guarenteed money into him.
To me i wouldnt be suprised to see them target a cb early-pavng the way for carr to leave next year.
Rb is also a position we all hope they address in the draft.
Linebacker is a position im certain they target early-we already know thy are high on kendricks and are bringing mckinney in for a predraft visit-id expect stephone anthong to be adde to this list also.
And finally i still expect them to target dline in the draft.

I fully expect the 1st 4 picks to consist of cb,lb,rb,dline.i say 1st 4 because i wouldnt be suprised if those 1st 4 picks were 2 2nds and 2 3rds-meaning yes a trade back.

But back to hardy.Imagine if we hadnt signed him,it would of ment an edge rusher early in the draft, mayb meaning a later pick on cb meaning carr would play here in 2016.
I think this deal is a very smart 1.Both in the structure of it and in the way it opens up options for us throughout the season and next offseason. It could and should be the 1st time in recent history that the cowboys arent backed into corners and will have the ability to truely do what they want to do,make roster moves that they want to make and have plenty of money available to lock u the players they want.Heck if they decide next year they want to keep hardy aswell as the likes of crawford, dez and leary and cut ties with carr then they could even front load 1 of those deals to the 1st year meaning future cap hits are lower and thus less risky.
Something i would not be suprised they do if they can come to an agreement with dez before his tag is locked in.Lower the hit this year, make it a big 1 (maybe around 20mill) in 2016 and thus lower hits in following years.
I like the deal they gave to greg hardy,i like the structure of it an i love the options it gives us going forward.
This fo are really reforming the cowboys organisation and making the future look very bright indeed.
Bring on the rings

Hardy signing changes little IMO as we still will need a DE with pass rush eliteness, he allows this years pick to underperform like Lawrence did last year, which is the normal progression for DE in the NFL. While our Hardy replacement gains experience we will still be competitive, Hardy is a tool for us that gets us through this transition of the defense nothing more, we still need to hit on some of these high draft picks.

The option is there to take a pass rusher early still, but it is no longer a need.Like it was previously.
We could instead take a corner.cut ties with carr after 2015 and resign hardy.
We now have 3 starting calibre de in lawrence(if he continues to progress) mincey (if he brings his 2014 game) and hardy.Plu we ave a year to look at what gardner,j crawford and lavar edwards can bring.
There is no longer the need to bring in an edge rusher early on,we could wait till later and take a flier on someone-much like the panthers did with hardy.
It changes everything and it opens up options for both the draft and the following offseason

Lawrence didn't underperform last year. He played very well for a rookie.

We have 14, or there about DL on the roster right now. With Hayden, Spencer and Crawford all still unsigned. At this point I don't see us re-signing any of them until after the draft, if available and / or needed.
Depends on who and where we draft for the DL. I can see a DT & DE both being taken. And if in top 4 rounds, none of those 3 will be back. We have more than enough competition at DT with all the young guys on the roster. But do need another DE if for anything to develop throughout the year behind Mincey and Hardy [for if he is only here for a year].

If you look at the DL roster we have, and depending on your point of view, we have a lot of potential if they are as good as some think they can be. But others won't see many of them good at all.
I think there can be a very good rotation there now that Hardy is here, and the emergence of Lawrence, as Hardy makes them all better, as he will get the attention for a DE we been lacking.

Which in turn makes the LB'ers better [possibly very good if RoMac signs]. Which them helps the secondary, though we need upgrades there still, as well as depth at minimum.

It is encouraging to know we will have mucho cap room in 2016, even with Romo and Dez on board with big$$ cap hits.

I disagree but understand your point of view, IMO he is a dirty band aid that allows us to transition with a rookie DE. Before you jump me, I know he is talented, it just rubs me similar to how we let Brent back with the team. He is now a cowboy and I will defend him against all comers but we would look at him differently if he was on another NFC east team. I been having trouble dealing with some of the signings starting back with pacman and this one smells eerily similar, desperation.
I am still drafting the best DE for our slot of the draft whether it be first, second, or third rd.

It's easy to talk about how much cap space we will have when you aren't counting 19 players towards the cap.

RB, LB and DB is our only real 'needs' now with RB being the most pressing.

Remember the days when we needed a center, a couple guards, DT, DE, CB, FS, SS, WR2. We're light years from the futile 8-8 years where Romo drove a talent-less squad to relevance every year.

not so easy when you still have 43 under contract tho,ad another say 10 from draft and unfa for about a 4mill hit.
so 53 under contract and 35mill space aint so shabby

I dont know how much dallas will really have left. If they sign hardy and dez long term thats like 29-32 million between those 2 players.
