by the way the reason i remembered was one of the videos on the multimedia section of the cowboys website is using the same song if that makes it slightly less random

Well the song is epic, whether that makes the ad great (or even effective) is up for debate.

I love Phil Collins, but I'm not sure why that would be genius. I like the fx, but I see nothing special about the commercial.

whats not to like about a gorilla playing drums to phil collins?! the whole marketing campaign was a glass and a half of joy, because for years it was their advertising boast that a glass and a half of milk went into each bar. the follow up adverts were nowhere near as good because firstly the concept of something incredibly random that would entertain but not traditionaly sell the product was no longer new and secondly well they just didn't have a drumming gorilla (i'll admit i'm easily pleased).

to be honest it probably worked a lot better than more traditional adverts because when it came out everybody was talking about it and therefore talking about dairy milk.
