The best draft strategy, but does it work?

A long term draft solution. The Cowboys will be going to the playoffs every year.

Year one. Trade to the bottom half of the first round for a second round pick.
Find any team desperate enough to trade next year's first for that second round pick.

Year two. With 2 first round picks, use one to trade for multiple second round picks, (2 stepdown trades), then trade one of the second round picks away for next year's first.

You see where I'm going with this. The Cowboys are doubling their draft value by being patient enough to wait for next year.

There's no better year to start this than a lockout year. And whenever the Cowboys need to, they can load up on PREMIUM talent.

Are any teams desperate enough to be a trade partner on this? What do you think?

Not sure if I want to do it with this year's first round pick, but I like the concept of trading current year picks in exchange for higher round picks in subsequent years. I was recently reading a book called Scorecasting that discussed this concept. It basically concluded that teams who traded current year picks for higher future picks realized around 170% return on their investment (based on the draft value charts).

The Cowboys seemed to be following this concept around 2007-08, but stopped doing this in 2009 when they squandered 12 picks in the 2009 draft. If they had continued rolling over these picks, they probably would have another first round pick by now.

So, the book has already been written. Well, 170% return seems worth it. Dallas has a lot of talent on this team right now, and might be able to stand such an approach.

Unless there is a qb available that a team wants I can't see teams making that type of trade.

This is a bit of overthinking.

Just draft guys who are impact players and not necessarily players of need.

Not overthinking it at all.

It's trading up from the 2nd round into the 1st for nothing more than patience.

And if you don't have patience in a lockout year, well, you're done.
