Getting the the FO / Coaching staff set is priority number one.
Reeves will be a solidifying component in securing the integrity of the evaluation process, and his presence is critical for next season.
Lets talk about the evaluation process, because IMO that is just as important to the success/failure of a franchise, more so than any other contributing factor.
Why you ask? Because their are only 53 roster spots available and only 22 of those start on most plays during the game.
Evaluation of the talent on hand is critical, and again, obtaining Reeves will be viewed more than likely as a brilliant move, later in the season than initially.
1) Is Hatcher/Bowen ready?
Cantys gone, no way we can match what his market value will bring.
Shake your head all you want at the excessive money thrown at Canty this off season, just gets you a sore neck, if the market prices him out of our grasp, he is a talent lost.
Thats the heartbreak of FA, something this franchise hasn't really faced in awhile if you thank about it. Jones has done a nice job of circumventing the cap and retaining key FAs' recently.
Canty brings a smile to agents greedy faces, because he has all the gift wrapping the a Christmas morning present has under the tree.
Long Arms, instinct, motor, and consistency is his game.
Not a D-Ware by any means of the imagination, but GM's across the nation will see Canty as a perfect fit in their respective systems, and thats what will drive Cantys value off the charts, and leave many a Cowboy fan shaking their heads as some needy franchise, pays the lofty price for his services.
2) Burnett/Thomas
Again, this is a critical evaluation to be made. Can Carp step in and replace Thomas/Burnett?
IMO, I really dont think so, but to be quite honest, ask yourselves this, has he been given an extended look?
I know this will start a major onslaught of Carp bashing, but sometimes you have to give certain players the reigns so to speak, and see how they ride.
Some players are just gamers. Is Carp? I dont know, I would hedge my bets and say he more than likely is a total bust, but I'm not a GM / Consultant, and quite possibly Reeves insight on this evaluation will be the very reason he is being brought in, to make these very critical decisions on key positional players.
Its critical this team gets it right with the personnel before the last week in April.
3) Number 2 QB
Probably should be the number 1 priority, but I will put it here because I'm too lazy to edit, but a legit backup to Romo is so very vital to the success/failure of this team again in 2009.
Brad was getting payed some fat money to be totally inept, and worthless, and this position is simply to critical to a franchise to not have a competent BU in place.
There are a few names that would be immediate upgrades, Fitzpatrick, O'Sullivan, for starters would be nice upgrades.
We all know that any BU QB in the league would have been better the Brad, but the two I've listed IMO would be monumental upgrades for basically the same price.
