I was thinking yesterday that it is somewhat ironic that Jerry and The Big Stein were business partners and friends, yet Jerry hasn't learned from the late Big Stein. George finally realized after his baseball team stunk in the 80's that he needed a "baseball guy" to be his GM, and pick the players. When he did hire a baseball guy they went on a run that was historic. Now, he still got involved in signing some big name free agents, but when they started winning in the 90's it was primarily home grown players. I wonder if George ever gave Jerry that same advice, or not. Seems like Jerry could learn something from the late Big Stein.

Our players are home grown as well. Like:

Romo
Felix
Barber
Choice
Miles
Dez
Hurd
Witten
Bennett
Phillips
Free
Gurode
Spears
Hatcher
Bowen
Ratliff
Spencer
James
Ware
Newman
Jenkins
Scandrick
Ball
Buehler
McBriar

And many others.

If Steinbrenner wanted a certain player, he got him and completely overuled Cashman. And I'm a born and raised Yankees fan, but the reason why they were dominant is that Steinbrenner was a master marketer of the team who was the most aggressive at paying players and baseball is a sport where if you plug in a great player into a new team, they usually play great. In football, you never quite know how they will gel with the coaching staff, teammates, etc. And then the injury rate is far higher and far more devastating than it is in the NFL.

And we really haven't been big players in FA since 2005. So one second we are supposed to not be big players in FA and the next second we are supposed to be like Steinbrenner and spend big money in FA (and remember, Steinbrenner spent big money on Giambi because he insisted he become a Yankee, then he wanted David Ortiz, but couldn't take him since he would have no place to play with Giambi on the team).

We need a team that is more focused, disciplined, pays closer attention to detail and has a great sense of urgency and intensity week in and week out. We need a coach that can instill those thing and a coach that wouldn't be afraid to take on players like Jason Witten, who is very mistake prone (of course, there's a right way and a wrong way to 'take on' Witten, but it's better than just leaving him alone).

I don't think talent is the issue and I've largely been happy with the drafting and I like that we don't make big FA splashes. The coaching is what really bothers me along with Jerry distracting the team for $27.50 a pop.

George was banned from baseball, he didn't give it up of his own free will. The Stick came in and built their team up via the farm system while George was cooling his heels.

Now, if we could get Jerry banned for a couple of years...

I'm sorry if my thoughts were not clear. I didn't mean that I think we should go spend or over spend on FA players. From being on here, not as much as others, it seems that fans want Jerry to hire a GM as Stein, did whether he was forced to or not. Your list of drafted players if great. I also think they have done a nice job in building this team. It will be interesting to see how many of those players are quality players that Jerry drafted since Bill left. I thought everyone wanted Jerry to hire a GM. Sorry for the confusion.
