Teams have been come back from larger deficits during the regular season. However, Atlanta allowed a three quarter lead that has NEVER been overcome in NFL postseason to disappear. Like a whimper. This is the worst failure of maintaining a lead in ANY pro football game. Ever.

I wonder if anyone can argue the fact differently.

the Oilers blew a bigger lead to a team that lost 4 straight Super Bowls. at least Atlanta lost it to the Patriots

True but the Oilers held a 35-31 lead over the Bills entering the fourth quarter of that AFC Wild Card game. The Falcons held a much larger lead at the start of the fourth quarter in the NFL's pinnacle game.

That'd be so brutal if it had happened to Dallas.

Patriots won the penalty game also, called for only 4 compared to Atlanta's 9.

One of the Patriots' flags was thrown while Martellus Bennett was trying to take a guy's shoulder pads off. That's how bad the hold was. However I was thinking at the time Bennett might not have been called for the foul if he hadn't been a Dallas Cowboy early in his career, lol.

I think The OC and HC blew it when they were in fg range, but as for the whole comeback, there were a lot of variables involved.
NE made some coaching errors too and some bad plays etc, but late in the game they got hot.

I think their (atl) style of play calls for speed and a lot of running, and they wore down, could be conditioning ?
But also brady passed 63 times lol and 96 total plays, so the Atlanta defense wore down, and I think that would wear any team down.

Atlanta needed to shorten the game by running, keep clock moving, not score more points, and they kept passing to try and score,
and that stopped the clock, going out of bounds stops the clock.

you could look at this like the turtle that beat the rabbit in a race, NE was constant, and Atlanta gave their best in first half and it wore them out.
Plus I said it in other threads, but to me and you and Atlanta, it looked like they had the game won at halftime, and at 28-3,
how many of you said O wait NE is gonna come back and win this !! lol, nobody did.

The long halftime favored NE who could plot and plan, but Atlanta had nothing to really work on.
Their adrenalin was all gone, kinda tired, and they thought they had it won, like we all did, then by late 4th, they like us started
to say hey wait whats going on here !! NE could tie this up !!

So it looks bad for atlanta, but really give NE credit for never giving up or letting up and being in good condition
to run 96 plays ! Brady was wore out at end of game, never seen him that wore out. He even broke down and cried
when he was down on his knees, he was wore out, but managed to keep going till they got that last td.

I thought it was hilarious. Some teams/players are just doomed to fail.

Yep...bigger lead (32 points) against a backup QB. That said, the stakes were far higher last night and all of 50 things had to fall perfectly for Atlanta to lose that game... and they all fell just right (or wrong, depending on your perspective)

Respective leads

45 minutes left in the game
2017 Super Bowl: Atlanta & New England tied 0-0 (zero point margin)
1993 AFC Wild Card: Houston leads Buffalo 7-3 (4-point margin)

2017 Super Bowl: Atlanta leads New England 28-9 (19-point margin)
1993 AFC Wild Card: Houston leads Buffalo 35-31 (4-point margin)

Relatively speaking, the 1993 Bills enjoyed five extra minutes to score a touchdown and an extra point during their comeback. Five minutes. 7 points. Exciting. That said...

The Bears beat the Giants in the first ever NFL playoff game in December 1933.

At the start of the fourth quarter, no team has ever led an opponent by 19 points of any postseason game since that game and lost.

84 years.

15 minutes.

Lost, THE SUPER BOWL, no less.
