The Blocked Punt

People keep saying horrible rule -- but what's the better rule? It's a punt -- if our guy can't handle the ball then he shouldn't have tried to grab it 8 feet in the air.
The kicking team should have to get the beyond the first down marker to maintain possession. It was 4th down and possession had not changed. The rule in this instance should require advancement past the marker. If a punt is blocked and the punter (or any other member of the kicking team) picks up the ball and takes off, they have to pick up a first down to keep the ball. Same thing should logically apply here. We never had possession of the ball and it was 4th down. Common sense.

Because that’s my opinion. What if it’s deflected and goes forward as a line drive, bounces off a defender’s helmet who is 1-yard beyond the line of scrimmage, deflects all the way back to the punter who is immediately tackled 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and you reward the kicking team possession. That’s idiotic.

Looool, okay.

Has that happened in the last 50 years of football?

I heard a lot of confusion (and crying) about the blocked punt that somehow turned into a first down for the Broncos.

The refs made the right call.

Think of the blocked punt no different than a muffed kick. In fact, if it makes it easier to understand imagine if the Cowboys player only got a piece of the ball and the punt still traveled 25-30 yards down the field and then Cedric Wilson or Lamb tried to return it but bobbled the ball and the Broncos recovered. That's first down Denver.

There's no conspiracy.

The fact the Broncos recovered it behind the 1st down marker has ZERO relevance to the play.

thanks for the info, relax with the “crying” it was a weird play and fans are charged up.

Why is it stupid?

If the receiving team touches the ball past the line of scrimmage it's a live ball. There's literally ZERO difference whether it's 10 yards past the LOS or 50 yards.

it rewards the team who a) didn't get a 1st, b) was blocked and c) didn't advance the ball past the 1st down marker.

Call was correct on a silly rule.

All of these rules that people think should be in effect are exactly what the rule is the block keeps the ball from crossing the LOS. Today was a tipped punt that wasn't sufficient to keep the ball from traveling past the LOS. Why should the punting team be penalized because the other team tipped a punt and couldn't hold on it when they tried to field it.

If no one tries to grab the ball in the mid-air and just left it alone, it's our ball wherever it stops.

the same reason it would be dumb if a fumble was forced and the offensive team recovered but didn’t make it last the first down market

Sorry, do you think a fumble and blocked punt are the same?

I see the problem.

But what if we picked the ball up, ran a few yards, and then fumbled it back. That would be a new set of downs. That's essentially what happened here.

I get it, but to get a first down when you don't cross the first down line is what makes it stupid to me.

only if it doesn't cross the line of scrimmage, otherwise it's a change of possession when the Dallas defender touched it beyond the line of scrimmage..
