It is repeated here and other places the NFL is a copycat league. Once a coordinator figures out what works, there will be others trying to mimic those plays, sets, or formations. Never let it be said sports journalists don't take their cue from the sport they cover. Below is an example of Greg Cosell revealing how the Cowboy's running game has positively affected Romo's passing game.

Sound familiar?

It should. Bob Sturm has been making these claims and successfully showing the X's and O's of this team all year, and year's past in his blog to the point he was picked up by the Dallas Morning News to bring this style of review to their paper.

Didn't take long for someone else to not only pick up on this and display it for readers outside of the Dallas area, but purloin an idea Sturm offered earlier in the week.

They say the highest form of flattery is imitation.

One might say in this case, it's the most effective way to look smart in the public's eye who doesn't read the Sturminator. Just put your name at the beginning of the headlines as the author, and genius ensues.

Shame on you Greg Cosell for stealing someone else's homework.

Greg Cosell's Film Review: How Dallas' run game is helping Tony Romo

The Dallas Cowboys’ success in the running game is trickling down to the passing game.
You are starting to see defenses react to Dallas’ running game, with their great offensive line and running back DeMarco Murray. The New York Giants did last week, and the Cowboys were able to throw the ball effectively.

Bravo Bob, for giving the fan what they want, which is a better understanding of the game, and a more focused eye on what is transpiring before our eyes.

My condolences for the wolves nipping at your heels.

Sturm is not the only one that can break down film and LB and S staying home on play action nor is fixating on TD from different authors surprising.

I am not a big fan of stat reporting where it becomes pages of numbers.
I know its very popular and some numbers give you a clear indication of how
players and schemes are thriving or failing. Stats are necessary for coaches and managers
but just not my game.
I get why its popular,however.

Greg Cosell has been breaking down game film for years. He has worked at NFL Films for 35 years and helped create the first "film breakdown" TV show 30 years ago. I had read Cosell's analysis before I had ever heard of Bob Sturm.

So the fact this was the exact thing Sturm posted with the same graphics is what mean.

Funny thing about Sturm is that he pontificated like a regular talking head for 15 years before deciding to make the effort to learn the game. Can't argue with the results, but it says something about his profession. Plus, he picked the Bucs to make the playoffs while ragging on the guy on his show who picked the Cowboys.

I think learning about the game and changing reporting styles aren't equivalent.

Is it the exact same graphics or the same video? Meaning, the arrows drawn on there were the same? Because that is NFL footage that anyone can make a screenshot from.

Not sure if this was not your meaning, but Sturm admitted that he knew little about football and sought out help to learn about a subject that he had been considered an expert at for over a decade. It says a lot about him that he was willing to put in the work. But it goes to show how little many of the voices probably know about it.

So you're saying Cosell stole Sturm's images and posted them on Yahoo?

Or are you saying that Sturm was the first person ever to put names and arrows on football images?

That is Sturms article that includes the TDs. Cossell's article is in the OP.

I agree and Cosell is spot on in most of his draft picks in the first couple of rounds(not where in the draft but talent level). He knew Martin was a player from the start. He also stated that Demarcus Lawrence was one of the few DE in the draft that could really bend around the tackle/blocker. He had Lawrence in the second round, no mention of Hitchens and the WR Devin Street ("more of a rounded off route runner who was more fast than quick") he was not sure how quickly Street could fit into an offense.

Yeah, I don't see it. A respected longtime NFL analyst and a guy nobody outside of Cowboys fans knows break down some of the same plays, and that's enough to claim the lesser-known analyst has an "effect on sports journalism." Uh, no. Sturm didn't originate that type of thing.

I have respect for both of them and don't find it surprising that they would find similar things important and talk about them.
