With Chris Boniol added as a kicking consultant, do not be surprised if the Dallas Cowboys use a draft choice on kicker Leigh Tiffin of Alabama.

Boniol directs kicking camps and lists Tiffin among his top students. Tiffin led the NCAA with 30 field goals last season and showed leg strength, making 4-of-6 tries from 48-plus yards. Tiffin also held up under pressure. He made four kicks in a 12-10 win over Tennessee that kept Alabama's national-title drive alive.

Tiffin is among three kickers in Indianapolis for the NFL combine workouts. The others are Michigan State's Brett Swenson, whom Tiffin clearly surpassed in Senior Bowl practices; and Aaron Pettrey of Ohio State.

Its gonna be sad when Hostile kills Chris Boniol

yeah i bet when hostile read that, he really got upset because now most likely we will spend a 6th or 7th round pick for a kicker like Tiffin

Oh someone just smear honey in my ears and stake me out on an anti hill. It would be less painful.

Even if the person doing the smearing and staking is a kicker?

It would give me a good reason to fight back if it was.

I admit, Kicker is a need, but damn!

What do you think the chances of Beuhler handling both kicking duties. There seems to be effort put into getting him some help for FGs. What was his college career like as a FG kicker?

Buehler started all of the 2007 season: in 13 games, he successfully made 16-of-19 field goals and 52-of-54 extra points, plus he made 3 tackles. Thirty-five of his 84 kickoffs kept opponents within their 20-yard line, with 18 touchbacks.
Buehler started all 13 games as a senior in the 2008 season, making 9 of 13 field goals and 65 of 66 extra points.[4] Three of his four missed field goals during the season came during his final regular season game against rival UCLA, where he missed all three attempts in a 28–7 Trojans victory. Buehler blamed himself for trying to do a different routine before his final regular-season game.[5] He was able to bounce back during the 2009 Rose Bowl, making his one field goal attempt and successfully kicking all five extra points in a 38–24 victory over Penn State.[4]
Buehler finished the 2009 season with 5,976 yards on 88 kickoffs. He also registered 48 total touchbacks on those 88 kickoffs.[6] As a result, he was named 2008 Kickoff Specialist Trophy Recipient by the College Football Performance Awards, the first honor in college football history for the position.

Thanks man. 16 of 19 and 9 of 13 in two seasons. Are the number of attempts per year usual for college kickers? It seems a little low to me. I don't follow college football so i don't really know. 15 of 32 for his college career also doesn't sound great.

he is 26 for 33 three misses came in one game. his attempts are low cause of the trojans scoring ability and only being a starter 2 years

How much can Chris Boniol help Cowboys kickers?

Todd Archer/Reporter

We're going kicker heavy here on the Cowboys blog after Gerry's post because I had another tidbit left over from a conversation I had with Chris Boniol on Tuesday.

From 1989-2004, Steve Hoffman was in charge of the Cowboys' kickers. He found them here, there and everywhere, including Boniol. He was let go in 2004 by Bill Parcells but interestingly Parcells kept him for a year in Miami and he had a rookie, Dan Carpenter, connect on 21-of-25 attempts. Now Hoffman is with a Parcells' disciple, Todd Haley, in Kansas City.

But this brings me back to Boniol. When kickers get in funks, they don't have a coach, generally, to lean on. Joe DeCamillis and all of the special teams coaches know how to help a kicker but not necessarily all of the varied techniques, which is why so many kickers have their own guru.

Boniol said Hoffman was a huge help to him.

"Once you get to that level as a player there's not much new technique," Boniol said. "There's always something you can study and learn from but I think where Hoff helped me a lot is just having someone in your corner that encourages you and somebody who can help you on the day to day stuff: how to do it on the field, in the weight room, in the locker room. You get a young player that doesn't know how to be a professional and there's a lot to learn, especially in an organization like the Cowboys."

Bonio sounded a little like new Rangers hitting instructor, Clint Hurdle. He's not out to change everybody and make them kick like he did. He's there as an extra set of eyes to help the process.

"I know my lane," Boniol said.

Drafting a kicker should be an option
February, 22, 2010 Feb 226:34PM CTComment Email Print Share
By Calvin Watkins

The Cowboys drafted a field goal kicker in 2007 when Nick Folk was selected in the sixth-round from Arizona. He reached the Pro Bowl in his rookie year but after that he lost all sorts of confidence.

He missed a NFL-high 10 kicks in 2009, and the Cowboys had to rid themselves of him.

Now, the team is looking for a kicker again.

David Buehler was drafted last season to be a kickoff specialists/cover man on special teams.

When Folk went though his issues, Buehler wasn't an option. He couldn't make a kick from anywhere. Part of it, Buehler said, was he doesn't practice it enough and his timing was off.

As the Cowboys prepare for the 2010 draft, selecting a kicker might be an option.

The top three kickers in the draft are Michigan State's Brett Swenson, Alabama's Leigh Tiffin and Texas' Hunter Lawrence. We're not saying these three men will be around the second or third day of the draft, but the Cowboys have to look at this position again.

Currently, Connor Hughes (futures roster) and Buehler (active roster) will compete for the field goal job when all the minicamps start this spring. But the Cowboys should add another kicker to the mix.

Oh my god, just kick the freaking ball Buehler.

No need to draft another kicker.
