All the options we had before we signed him, we still have now.

No reason to think we don't

this guy signed for 6 million dollars over 3 years with 2.5 in bonus that will be prorated over those 3 years. This looks very much like a 1-2 year contract with the option of retaining him in the last two years.

he is getting paid less than bobby carpenter and bradie james.

in fact he is making just more than spencer.

Its pretty much what we're giving holland as a veteran backup.

If we still wanted to get burnett we could.
if we still wanted to get lewis we could.

it just happens that these players aren't worth the money they want. so they're gonna draft a linebacker and see what he, carpenter, and brooking can do.

While you may be right, I have a gut feeling that Jerry/Wade/scouts feel like our most pressing needs - S, ILB, DL, OL - line up pretty well with our picks in the 2nd, 3rd and multiple in the 4th rounds. I also feel that we may sign another reasonable veteran FA or two before the draft. Just my 2 cents.

You are probably right. however good teams are built thru the draft not reliant on FA. Brooking and Holland are the kind of quality backups that are cheap that we should be looking for. Then you save $$$ for much larger deals ie. T.O. , Lenard Davis and soon to be Ware.

Brooking has come in to be the starter on first and second down. We need a coverage LB to come in on passing situations if we do not re-sign Burnett (which doesn't look likely at this point). I like Jasper Brinkley from South Carolina. Brooking is definitely not great in coverage at this point in his career...

I agree with you completely. I believe any FAs we sign will be to deals very similar to Brooking's - very cap friendly. We are saving our money for Ware's contract, which will be enormous but well-deserved.

Yes Brooking was brought in to be the short term starter, but he is not the long term solution and he was compensated accordingly. Yes I love Jasper Brinkley in the early 4th Rould. I would let Brinkley compete for the starters job as a rookie but I would expect him to take over in year 2

Totally agree about the teams thinking about the positions mentioned regarding our draft approach. Would like to get Springs and see either a monsterous NT or coverage capable SS taken with our 2nd rounder. If Rey from USC dips it's worth it to move up and sacrifice to get another LB of that pedigree. Doubt he slides like that though. NT's, Safeties and LB's get good value in the 2nd round. Those positions along with RB and guard always seem to offer the best 2nd round value every year.

I'm sure we'll draft a LB or two. Possibly one each for ILB and OLB.

I think the Brookings deal prevents Dallas from feeling they have to reach in the draft for an ILB. I hope we can address the position in the draft but Dallas can't afford to start reaching to fill positions.

I don't mind the Brooking deal if it means they're going to do their jobs and continue to draft well and get us guys in those positions through the draft. That's the better, smarter, more efficent way to shore up the teams depth issues anyway.

Reach for what, we have like 3 positions of great need and that's ILB, SS, DT.....we have over 10 picks, so we should be able to find someone good, what the heck draft 6 ILBs and keep the best 2........

Reach for players out of need. Look if when we pick the best player on our board is an ILB then take him if not then don't draft him out of need. Brooking gives us a bit of a safety net in that regard he also gives us a safety net in terms of whether the rookie would be ready to start from day 1. As for the comment draft 6 and keep the 2 best ones that is the kind of draft that gets a team into trouble.

This is a strong ILB draft early but they are all likely to be long gone by pick 51. Brooking at least gives us a two down LB. Passing situations can be handled by the strong safety we take early, which would fill a need in two fronts. It could even be Roy Williams if he stays.

Very true although that may be a very big if in Roy Williams. I hope we can address ILB but who knows how the draft will go. Brookings I feel gives Dallas a bit of a safety net.
