Ok so this is something I wrote regarding the Catch rule. I dont know if this belongs in fan zone or NFL zone, because it directly affected the Cowboys, ill put it in here, if it gets moved it gets moved. Enjoy

"This is going to be quick and to the point. The catch rule in football has been changed 3 times in the past 3 years. Trying to make it easier for the referees to understand, that in itself should explain everything you need to know about it."

Here's the thing. EVERYBODY knows what a catch looks like. Players, coaches, referees, and fans. We know. This wasn't a problem 30 years ago, and now suddenly it's the biggest issue in the NFL. Leave it up to paste-eating dudes that got stuffed in trash cans growing up to complicate the uncomplicated.

This is all the rule should state: "The ball must be caught and controlled with one foot down, or any body part touching the field. The ground can't cause a fumble; therefore, it can't cause an incompletion either."

That should be it. Use referee judgment from there, and reviews should be much fewer and further in between.

What's ironic about this is the ground can cause a fumble

And the Raiders are still complaining about Franco Harris' catch as well in the title game! Maybe we should bring back crappy cameras? ;)

Since when?

since the beginning of football. if a player dives for more yards and is not touched by a defender, and during that dive the ball hits the ground and comes lose, it's a fumble.

even if there is contact with a defender, in the extremely unlikely and almost impossible scenario of the ball contacting the ground without the player's knee, elbow, ect hitting the ground (thus ending the play), and comes lose, it's a fumble.

Nope, if he's touched on the way down, it's not a fumble if it comes lose when the ball carrier hits the ground. Obviously, if he's not touched, the play is alive, and the ground is not in play.

He could be holding the ball in one hand. He is in the air, diving or what not, and he is coming down. The ball hits the ground first and comes lose before he ever hits the ground. Fumble.

the catch rule has a purpose with the way it is written it is intended if the officials so desire than can change the results of the game. everyone can argue but blandino will have an explanation.

you didnt read what I said. the example I gave said if the ball hits the ground w/o the ball carrier touching the ground. in that scenario, it's a fumble

Two feet down and control was always a catch for 30 years, until the NFL wanted to play politics.

The game has changed over the past 30 years and so have the rules due to accommodate the modern player so a legal catch under the rules today isn't that simple anymore.

Not under the rule. Explain your reasoning how the ground can cause a fumble?

I did earlier...if the ball comes lose after contacting the ground, without being touched by a defender, it a fumble.

if there is contact with a defender, but the player doesn't touch the ground until after the ground forces the ball loose, its a fumble

A fumble occurs "before" the ball touches the ground regardless if a player comes in contact with a defender unless their knee, elbow or butt contacts the ground first prior to them losing the ball. The ground can't cause a fumble under any circumstance.
