In politics people always bring up the "character issue" & debate whether it should make a difference in casting their vote. Some value it alot more than others.
It's obvious that our GM doesn't put too much credence in the character of signees. As long as they can win us some game, who cares what they do in their "personal" lives off the field?
Thus we have a Tank Johnson & a Pacman Jones, added to an emotionally fragile team that faces more pressure & scrutiny than any other professional
franchise.
Add to that potent mix the "me-1st" attitude reflected in the character of a TO, & we have, what we now have.
IMO, I've found that a person's true character eventually emerges in one form or another over the long run.
Having Tank & Pacman, & yes, TO, was never an asset to this team.
Rather, it was a pathetic attempt at garnering headlines for being "controversial" & colorful, rather that laying a winning foundation.
As a fan, I held my nose & cheered, but winced everytime I considered our GM's signees.
But, just like in life or politics, a leopard can never change it's spots.
Witness the carnage when the team hit a few rough spots- not unlike rats adandoning a sinking ship.
On this fact alone, JJ should willfully resign as GM of the Dallas Cowboys!

In Jerry's defence, I think that he was trying to get fallen stars on the cheap more than trying to grab headlines. In the end,' it wasn't worth the cost.

He never learns. But he keeps thinking of himself as some kind of maverick risk-taker. Although the only thing he ever really did was buy the team and hire his former college teammate to be the HC in '89.

It doesn't matter that he hasn't won a thing in 13 years, Jerry's still this risk-taker legend in his own mind and never seems to learn.

I see nothing wrong with taking risks. I do see something wrong with not knowing when to cut your losses. Jones should have been put on the shelf after the suspension, instead Jerry defended him.

Tank, well, here was a guy who despite his issues had been a really good teammate in Chicago -- Lovie Smith and Urlacher both supported him. I thought it would turn out different with him. He turned into a bad lockerroom guy but he didn't get in any trouble other than that.

TO, you know what you are getting there. Compared to his other stops, he's been an angel here.
