If you have the mindset of 4 down territory every drive no matter what, it changes everything. 3rd and 7, you could actually still run the ball if needed. I really think it would be fun to see what a game would look like if you took away punting for both sides. No longer is 3rd down a critical down where you need all the yards you need for the 1st. I do not hate this strategy at all. I have heard about this years ago and was very intrigued. There are a lot of articles that dive into all the stats and numbers of going for it on 4th.
I always loathed punting when it's 4th and short from around midfield. In any circumstance. One instance that comes to mind was our 2009 playoff game with the Vikings. 4th and inches from around their 35 and we kicked a FG. Just go for it. Especially as the road team and the underdog. Which we were.
NFL coaches just do it the way it has always been done, they cant change, and everyone including gm's and owners
are all programmed to keep doing it the same way.
one thing I liked about kelly is he said his school was way smaller than the other schools he would have to play.
So to overcome talent numbers, and facilties that were superior, he decided he had to be different to win.
He is the football version of sun su sp? the book on war.
The other thing is the players have to buy into it too, and this guy has new players all the time, so he has to reprogram them,
but it is easier the younger they are.
I thought he was wrong to go for it from his own 2, but now year or 2 later I see this again, and I see why he does that.
if he punts your giving them the ball inside your territory on the punt and they will probably score and take more time doing it.
He likes as many possessions as possible, so he would rather just give them a quick td and get the ball back
