I have listened to the "talking heads" bash the Commanders and question their thought process in drafting two QB's. The main arguments against it seem to be:

1. You paid RGIII to be than man, and you are going to give him every opportunity to be the man, so why waste the pick when you have so many other team needs.

2. You want RGIII to feel comfortable being the man, and you don't want RGIII looking over his shoulder at the guy drafted below him.

3. You don't want a QB controversy to erupt between him and Kirk Cousins.

4. Cousins cant be adequately developed as a backup because there won't be enough snaps to go around.

I am sure there are other reasons that have been discussed, but you get the general gist of it.

I think the Commanders made a good decision in drafting Cousins for several reasons which include:

1. They put a lot of eggs in the RGIII basket, and if he flops (ala Ryan Leaf) and they get lucky and hit on Cousins, then the "miss" on RGIII is inconsequential, since they would have found their franchise QB anyway in that same draft. In effect, the rebuilding effort isn't delayed yet another year.

2. Even if RGIII turns out to be the next "greatest thing since sliced bread" they will still need a quality backup. Grossman is marginal, and with as much experience as Cousins brings to the table, it is possible that Grossman becomes expendable this year ... freeing up salary cap space which the Skins will need in light of the huge cap penalty they got this year.

3. Cousins comes on the cheap and they have him under contract for several years .... which solidifies the backup QB position for them for the next several years, and keeps the cap hit for that position at a minimum for several years.

4. If Cousins develops like they hope AND RGIII is the franchise QB they expect him to be then Cousins can be traded at some point and part of the investment that they made in RGIII can be recouped in the trade.

5. Competition is a good thing. If Cousins pushes RGIII than that forces RGIII to learn the play book and perform at a high level. I don't buy into the theory that you don't want the QB looking over his shoulder. Competition forces players to compete and get better as fast as they can. That alone might have been reason enough to draft Cousins.

I think it was a good call for no other reason than I am high on Cousins. I have spent most of my life watching Big 10 football and (yeah I know call me crazy) he reminds me a bit of Brady coming out of Michigan.

If Cousins was so great then maybe they should build the team around him. Instead of trading away several high draft picks, they could have used those picks to bring in other components to build around Cousins.

Hitting on Cousins does not offset what they paid to get Griffin if he goes on to fail.

When the Cowboys drafted Aikman it was obvious to most that he was the guy. But it didn't stop others from thinking the inferior Steve Walsh was, so there was controversy and Walsh had to be traded. QB is and always will be a position where you don't want competition. You want one guy that you think is a franchise qb and one guy you think is a backup.

I disagree. With what they spent to get RGIII, you need that 4th rounder to get him some help because you are going to be out a bunch of future premium picks. That pick should have been an OL or WR. Cousins may be a fine QB but now you set up the situation where fans are going to call for him to play when RGIII has a bad game. You may have split opinions on your QB situation amoung the players, coaches, and fans. Cousins is unlikely to play enough to trade for more than a 3rd, maybe a 2nd at most. Is that payoff worth it? I don't think so. I'd rather be developing a player alongside RGIII that will be part of the future when he develops.

What if both RGIII and Cousins flops? :laugh2:

Then you call them typical Commander Quarterbacks and move on.

Granted this will mean another 5 years of re-building.

I don't think it was a good move because at the 4th round, it's too high of a pick to not address other possible holes or to add depth. I like the Ron Wolfe way...draft a QB in the 6th or 7th round each year, if he works out...great, trade him away for a big pick. If he doesn't, your odds of seeing another player from a different position work out is just about the same.

But in the 4th round you can pretty much add every positon with good success there, outside of tackle and an elite WR (it can happen, but likely won't).

The problem is that the risk is high because Cousins won't take many snaps in practice. If you had a veteran QB starting, you could give away snaps to Cousins because the vet should be comfortable with the offense by now. But with RGIII being a rookie and in a very different offense, he'll need ever snap he can get in practice for the next 3 years (at least).

It reeks of Heath Shuler and Gus Frerotte, all over again :D

Any truth to the rumor that Jimmy Johnson said or actually did go to the airport to pick up Steve Walsh?

And Dallas has done what since the last SB appearance?

this is like saying i got mugged but it was only for 5 bucks, no the Skins sold a very expensive farm twice so doing this, u dont lose a Pro Bowl CB for a running back and call it even. U dont sell that farm for RG3 in the hopes that if it goes wrong u have a back up plan.

Its stupid across the boards. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and this one isnt even a cigar, its a bad move.

Total ownage. Skins fans just need to shut up and know their place.

Not a skins fan, champ. Does winning 28 games against the skins win a SB?

Under Cover Skins Fan getting owned!!!!

I am getting owned, because some idiot is bragging how Dallas has beaten the Skins 20 some off times since 1995, and neither team has won the SB since then...Very clever, what toy are you going to be playing with in preschool today?

Don't cry little danny snyder. Beating your team 20 times since 95, is that why you are so ANGRY?

Just think, you have RG? to get you back to the big game. Too bad you wasted a pick on a backup QB that could have added much needed depth at CB, FS, OL, LB, DL, or TE... Your TE & Left Tackle are one toke away from a 1-year ban.

After futher thought, I would be ANGRY also...
