I have listened to the "talking heads" bash the Commanders and question their thought process in drafting two QB's. The main arguments against it seem to be:
1. You paid RGIII to be than man, and you are going to give him every opportunity to be the man, so why waste the pick when you have so many other team needs.
2. You want RGIII to feel comfortable being the man, and you don't want RGIII looking over his shoulder at the guy drafted below him.
3. You don't want a QB controversy to erupt between him and Kirk Cousins.
4. Cousins cant be adequately developed as a backup because there won't be enough snaps to go around.
I am sure there are other reasons that have been discussed, but you get the general gist of it.
I think the Commanders made a good decision in drafting Cousins for several reasons which include:
1. They put a lot of eggs in the RGIII basket, and if he flops (ala Ryan Leaf) and they get lucky and hit on Cousins, then the "miss" on RGIII is inconsequential, since they would have found their franchise QB anyway in that same draft. In effect, the rebuilding effort isn't delayed yet another year.
2. Even if RGIII turns out to be the next "greatest thing since sliced bread" they will still need a quality backup. Grossman is marginal, and with as much experience as Cousins brings to the table, it is possible that Grossman becomes expendable this year ... freeing up salary cap space which the Skins will need in light of the huge cap penalty they got this year.
3. Cousins comes on the cheap and they have him under contract for several years .... which solidifies the backup QB position for them for the next several years, and keeps the cap hit for that position at a minimum for several years.
4. If Cousins develops like they hope AND RGIII is the franchise QB they expect him to be then Cousins can be traded at some point and part of the investment that they made in RGIII can be recouped in the trade.
5. Competition is a good thing. If Cousins pushes RGIII than that forces RGIII to learn the play book and perform at a high level. I don't buy into the theory that you don't want the QB looking over his shoulder. Competition forces players to compete and get better as fast as they can. That alone might have been reason enough to draft Cousins.
