Here's some interesting points about the Dez negotiation that I've heard bandied about locally on the air waves and among cohorts.
From the Cowboys perspective:
1. A deal was pretty much done last season, but when Dez changed agents, it put it on hold. Now, new agent Tom Condon is using that deal as a STARTING POINT for this deal, which justifies him as an agent.
2. The cap hit this year is pretty much the same for the franchise tag as it would be for a long-term deal.
3. Dallas doesn't need cap room this season unless they were to sign Adrian Peterson. So they'd probably structure a long-term deal to take a big hit this year anyway.
4. As such, the injury risk is on Dez for this season under the franchise. That risk would shift to the Cowboys on a long-term deal. (Same for anything off the field.)
5. Dez wants this done by July 15th badly; it's been eating him up for months. The Cowboys' deadline is really next year at this time; they're perfectly fine as is.
6. Tony Romo might only have two good years left possibly. Who's going to throw it to Dez at the end of his deal?
If you're Jerry/Stephen, what would you do?
