All the talk of Lael Collins possibly moving to LG, or the Cowboys expecting to draft an OG
is contributing to the lack of progress from former 3rd round pick Conner McGovern.

- From what was expected from McGovern, we shouldn't have to be addressing the LG role, assuming Williams moves on in FA departure.
McGovern was supposed to be the heir apparent for CW.

- I immediately got the feeling 2 years ago in 2020, that new OL coach Joe Philibin didn't seem
to be fond of McGovern. He even had rookie Tyler B in at LG, for Williams for a few snaps
instead of McGovern.
Because of injury- and Martin switch to RT, McGovern got his starting chance at RG in '20.
But when CW was benched, Gov started at LG, and was dreadful. Re-enter CW.

- And then was the report that McGovern plays better at RG, than he does LG ?.
sorry but imo, ..If you're suppose to be a top OG prospect, it shouldn't matter if you're left or right, you
should be an immediate plug and play player and your presence felt the more experience you get.

- And to this day, this dude has the skinniest arms i've ever seen on a top OG prospect, looks like
he's never lifted weights in his entire life.

So skinny arms, another player playing guard, and a potential draft pick at guard has hindered his ability.

great scouting report.

we saw McGovern in action. he replaced Williams for a few games and we were much worse. he is as weak as Biadasz which made the middle of the OL very soft. we never got any push up front. that's why Penalty Williams was put back in.

he is nothing but back up material and used in special plays like he had been.

we have talent on this team. our goal shouldn't be to maximize the number of draft picks this year, but to find the right talent for our weaknesses. I would love to trade up and get the center from Iowa. and then draft a guard or sign one in FA after letting Williams walk. we have to solifify this OL, else it will be more of the same.

Overall point....yep, when you're a draft only team a 3rd round pick in his fourth year needs to be a solid starter or you'll feel it.

I dont agree on left side vs right side thing though.

I can see it being a non-issue to some and very problematic to others.

I'm not saying thats McGoverns problem....and most of the good ball I recall seeing him play at PSU was at LG....so it wouldn't add up for me anyway.

But yeah....after seeing him fill in admirably for Martin in 2020, and knowing Williams would be gone after 21, I was calling for the heir apparent all season.

I guess be careful what you wish for because that's the exact moment Biadasz play got worse and the run game followed, then we struggled against anything close to a decent defense.

It's always good to hit on your first three draft picks. How many players have we picked in the first three rounds that have earned a second contract?

2016 Zeke and Jaylon cut
2015 Gregory?
2014 Zack Martin and DLaw
2013 Fredrick got sick
2012 Crawford
2011 Tyron Smith

That's some list. Says a lot.

Yep....they begged him to take the starting job from CW, he couldn't.

Yeah good point.

The whole Biadasz being from the same school etc thing was cute, but it's fairly clear he isnt anything close to Frederick.

I think he is a fine backup and will probably play a good eight years, but he won't be a starter on a good team.

Hate to admit it because we really need to hit on 4th round picks....most of the time anyway, and this one was considered safe.

As long as JJ don’t decide to use the 2nd round to experiment. We know McClay gives his advice to JJ on who to draft. We don’t how much of the advice he takes..

Nope. We don't but I feel fairly confident that the later we get into a draft the more likely it is McClay is getting his guy. I don't think Jerry as the GM or Stephen as the Director of Player Personnel even know the players at that point. Which is healthy for an organization.

Jerry has always said in his pre-draft and post-draft interviews, that it's the teams first 3 picks that are the biggest expected contributors.

i can't blame the team for the Biadasz pick in the fourth, .and it was at the bottom of the 4th rd, so that was so very close to being more of a 5th rd pick.
He was an Dave Rimington winner in college for the best center, and he was more in the mold of those Packers like OLinemen.
It'd be different if Tyler was an early round invested pick.

What i had started to ponder if OL coach Philibin didn't seem particularly fond of Biadasz, too, as well McGovern.
To a point that Philibin was trying to prepare Conner Williams to be the eventual starter, instead of being an emergence backup center.

- i found it very perculiar that although McGovern supposedly had some playing experience at center in college at Penn State, but yet Philibin seemed very reluctant to try McGovern there
instead choosing to more with Williams at center, ... until the pressure was on, that more possible help had to be considered just in case there was an unfortunate injury to Biadasz.

- Knock on wood that Biadasz never got hurt and thus it never came to that.

- But only because Williams was struggling so much at center during the summer, that it finally became a thought to Philibin to go ahead and see if McGovern can get reps at center just in case
there's an injury to Biadasz..
