Jerry may not be the most shrewd GM in all the land but he is, invariably, the best snake oil salesman in Texas and possibly on the planet. Granted he may use too many lip smacks but that is beside the point.

Purportedly Jerry plans to have a contract with "The One Of Whom We Do Not Speak" ("TOOWWDNS") within the next two weeks. The only obvious reason of having the conversation with TOOWWDNS is to ask him to accept a pay cut.

I, personally, do not think TOOWWDNS will accept a pay cut because I think he believes he is still all that and a bag of chips. I think that it is most likely that he does not accept a pay cut and forces the team's hand. I do not know if the team will cut him or not if he does not accept a pay cut, but a reasonable person would probably not approach TOOWWDNS about taking a pay cut unless they really intend to cut him if he doesn't accept a salary reduction.

Another option would be to offer TOOWWDNS a salary reduction but also an incentive based plan to make as much or more than he is already making. That plays into TOOWWDNS' misconception that he is still a top 5 receiver so that may be palatable to him.

If, and I do mean IF TOOWWDNS is willing to take a pay cut what is the most that you would think that TOOWWDNS would accept before moving on? I don't think he would accept $8,000,000 per year. So it would arguably have to be north of that number.

I think the problem with speaking with TOOWWDNS about this is if you are only going to ask him to shave off a million or two, why have the conversation at all?

You would think that if it's a big enough issue that the Cowboys are going to address it and risk him melting down that the requested pay cut is going to be significant. That's why I think this deal is likely to head south in a hurry when this conversation occurs.

I know Jerry loves TOOWWDNS and that relationship may help smooth all of this over, but it's very dicey. What do you guys think is going to happen with this?

This would be a better option...

Why do you guys have to always bring Dez into the conversation?

I think the Cowboys will simply restructure his deal, maybe add a couple of years that he'll never see by promising him more money up front.

For example, the team could give him $12 million in bonus, which spread across four years would be $3 million each. Take that off the next two years and you've reduced his hit in those years by $3 million. He gets a couple of years added on for whatever (you could do the same amount he makes the next two years $12.5 million), when realistically your going to cut him those years for a cap savings of $9.5 million.

So, 2018 becomes $6.5 million base, $4 million prorated bonus, $3 restructure bonus for $13.5 million instead of $16.5. The next year's the same. Then there's the two $15.5 million years that won't be paid.

If you want to save more money this year with the possibility of cutting him next year, then lower his base to $1 million for the restructure, so he's making $8 million total -- $1 million base, $4 million prorated, $3 million restructure. (Again, he loses nothing because his salary is paid to him in a restructure bonus.) Then in 2019, his cap hit would be $500,000 ($9 million in restructure bonus, plus $4 million prorated bonus minus $12.5 million base salary).

I think Dez would be more amenable to plan A because he's pretty much guaranteed two years at $13.5 million each. Still, $12 million guaranteed is nothing to sneeze at.

However, Dallas really doesn't have a need to restructure unless it plans to sign another free agent. If the team just lets his contract play out, he's off the books in two years. That's what I'd do because even if we do need to cut him next year, we save $8.5 million in cap space.

I think Dez is going to redo his contract and accept lower base salary in exchange for guaranteeing a large portion of it.

Its the same thing they did with Brandon Carr.

Most of the time, players are reasonable and they know when their play doesn't match their contract.

Lets see if Dez is reasonable.
