The small ones could rip your limbs off. The silverback could pull your spine out of your body. The insertion and origin of the muscles on their frame give them several factors greater force than we can manage with the same mass.

For those following along at home, lemme 'splain it. A human's muscles attach close to the fulcrum/joint while most of the great apes attach further down the skeletal system. Tense up your upper arm and look where it attaches to your forearm. A great ape's attaches much further down the forearm.

For a practical example, open a door slightly. Now try to push it open by pushing on the door itself about an inch from the hinge. Takes a lot of force to move it right? That's the equivalent of a human muscle/skeletal hinge mechanism.

The ape muscle works more efficiently by pushing the door open from the mid-point of the door. A lot more force out of the same, or similar, muscle mass by changing the insertion point on the forelimb.

Did you seriously think that we all needed you to go to this length to explain to us that silverback gorillas are much stronger than us?

The point he was making wasn't necessarily that they are stronger, it's that their muscular system is more efficient than ours.

btw, some people enjoy reading interesting facts. Since you're not, you didn't have to read it...or complain about it.

Glad you enjoyed it and learned something that you didn't know.

Guess I was wrong, some people did need him to explain to them that gorillas are stronger than us.

My bad.

I thought gorillas were stronger because they were mostly vegetarian. :p:

No. It's because they eat more bananas than we do. :D

I don't think anyone was confused about whether gorillas were stronger. Some of us just found his explanation of the biomechanics interesting.

But, I suspect that you knew what we meant and just enjoy being insulting.

The gorillas only acted that way because they knew the cameras were rolling.
