Regardless of what happens in the playoffs, Cowboy fans should be encouraged with the direction the team is going. Outside of Tony Romo and Jason Witten, the core of their team is extremely young. Here are the ages of 17 players who I consider to be core players on the Cowboys roster (as of 12/27/2014):

This is exactly right. The thing to consider with a young QB is that most early draft picks come in to a terrible team and get beat up. The Cowboys have one of the top OLines and 4 out of 5 of them are 25 or younger. A young QB would be setup to succeed with this OLine and Dez. It's not that what poor slobs they have in Tampa Bay trying to find their way with that offense.
This is exactly right.
A team without a QB is going nowhere. This is true.
Finding a successful QB is really hard, as we can see from the failure rate of highly-drafted QBs. I believe you can reduce that risk and give yourself a much better chance of ending up with The Guy if you put him in a position to succeed, by surrounding him with a great O-Line and good skill players. When you throw him into a lousy situation, he's likely to just fail to develop (see David Carr and many other examples).
Who is the next "franchise" QB coming out in the draft in the next year or two?
This roster is filled with young players ready to make an impact for years to come. I would do everything possible to keep McClay.
Many teams try drafting a QB early and then building around him. I would build the team with a veteran QB and then draft the QB early once the team is in place.
I definitely agree. I think we have Romo for 2 years max. That gives us two years to groom a replacement. I don't believe Vaughn is the guy. Lightning doesn't strike twice ... and to believe we'll find two UDFA QB's who turn out to be franchise QB's is a lesson in daydreaming. We may need to bite the bullet and pull an Aaron Rodgers. Draft a highly touted QB in the first round, and let him learn the game for 2-3 years.
BuzzkillingtonSure, Romo could play at this level another 2 or 3 years. But he also could never do it again. He could break down next year. We don't know. That's my point. That uncertainty and eventual reality makes it hard to get too excited about the future.
