The Cowboys have outscored their opponents 137-85 in the 4th quarter

Lol. A positive thread about 4th quarter scoring inexplicably reveals yet another problem with the team's coaching. Who knew? I'm feeling really enlightened over here. Thanks, everybody!

In all honesty (and I guess we are all to blame), but the discussion around here is getting a bit stale... they all run this way:

Garrett is an idiot... evidence to the contrary.. evidence doesn't satisfy... guys who don't get it are idiots... no the guys who say we don't get it are idiots...

next thread

Garrett is great....evidence to the contrary... evidence doesn't satisfy (because it really doesn't :))... guys who don't get it are idiots... no the guys who say we don't get it are idiots....

next thread

Jerry is an idiot... no Garrett is the problem... blah blah blah
Jerry is great... no Garrett is proof that he isn't... blah blah blah

next thread

player does something stupid... Garrett is the reason.... blah blah blah
player does something great... and everything else would be great if Garrett wasn't here.. blah blah blah

etc etc etc.

All day, every day.

You might consider making a thread about this. Just a thought. (BTW, that's a great thread idea. I hope it gets the traction it deserves. Especially from posters who are normally not so positively inclined. Would be nice to have some fodder for a broader discussion).

There are issues with looking at cumulative year stats as a predictor of wins. Its better to build the thesis on a game by game level. Ex: if dallasTeam A outscores team Y by 28-0 in half one, that one game can skew cumulative results for both teams .

That said, I did a regression (as did Shinywalrus) a couple of weeks ago that statistically shows H1 is more highly correlated with Wins than 2nd half scoring.

Below that seem to illustrate that all Division leading teams are in the top 10 in either point diff or total points. The Giants are borderline, but they also have the worst div leading record.

Interesting that SF is ranked 27th in total 1st qtr points, but 14th in 1st quarter pt diff. Also Denver owns the second half.

Atl and Houston are early starters and have the best records. NE scores and scores

The Cowboys have outscored their opponents 137-85 in the 4th quarter so far this year. There is a reason Mike Woicik has 6 SB rings. NFL games are won and lost in the 4th quarter and the 'Boys are even better in the 4th the last 5 games than earlier in the year (possibly because of lesser foes).

The Cowboys have been beaten down in the first half most of the season and have had to play with a sense of urgency in the second half. In the last 4 games the Cowboys have been outscored 71-23 in the first half.

I see this as more of an indictment on overall game planning than an endorsement for conditioning, but that is just me.

Games are won in quarters 1-4. No quarter is more important than the next.

I would like to state however, that although I think the Cowboys are a second half team, for whatever reason. How many of those points in this stat came against teams that had the game won and started playing more vanilla.

Just wondering.

And in games in non-domed fields, when the wind blows south by southwest, with partly cloudy skies, when the band plays the Star Spangled Banner instead of it being recorded, when 5 or less of the Dallas cheerleaders are riding Peter Cottontail, and Garrett did not cut himself shaving before the game, and Jerry drank only single malted scotch the night before, Dallas scores twice in the last five minutes, but no win is guaranteed.

Sometimes you guys come up with the weirdest combonation of events to support something with stats that I have ever seen.

The fourth quarter is a weird combination? For a team that's roundly criticized for choking games away? Or was this in response to a specific post where it might make more sense?

This is merely my suggestion stats lie. That people will come up with combinations of events that support positions that may not be true.

There is one stat in this game that matters and that is the final score. Everything else is bookkeeping to soothe the one who didn't win.
