I am curious how the members here feel the post Romo era will play out in Dallas. Here are a few questions I would like to hear your thoughts on, and please, lets keep it civil and reasonable.

1. How long do you think Romo will play, and why?

2. For those of you who do not believe Romo will play out his full contract, do you see his career being cut short by injury, Romo cut due to poor play, see him retiring after winning a super bowl, or some other reason?

3. Do you think that we will have Romo's successor already on the team when he retires, or will there be a gap between Romo's departure and his successful successor taking over?

4. Regarding Romo's successor, do you see him being a traditional franchise type of QB (Brady, Manning, Brees, Ben, etc) or do you think we will attempt to fill it with a multi purpose QB (more like Cam)

5. If you see a gap between Romo and his successor, how long do you see the gap lasting between Romo's departure and us getting meaningful, acceptable QB play after his departure?

1. I think he will only have 2 years left if we are lucky, injuries and age will be too much by then.

2. Injuries will be too much to go on

3. I personally think Dak will be the guy, and at minimum be the fill in guy.

4. We will definitely be after a franchise guy. I don't think this team has a heart for fill in guys anymore

5. I don't think we will be missing a step. If I am right in believing Dak can be the guy, then he has time to work himself in with the guys and the system.

1: 2 years. Simply because he is getting up there in age

2: see#1

3:I think they will draft one in the first next year. They seemed pretty serious about getting a QB last. I also think they have a very high value on the 5th year option

4: Traditional

I am not worried about this because The FO has made it abundantly clear that finding our next franchise QB is the no 1 priority and only the the two trade ups ahead of us stopped us from taking a QB at 4,i would bet on a QB next year in the first RD.
This. I would be shocked if we dont draftt a QB in the first next year.

Prescott is practically a 5th round pick

2 good years... I cant see him performing at a high level until 40 especially considering he never had the strongest of arms. No clue on how long it would take to replace him. Chances are we see Dak as the eventual replacement and give him first crack along with bringing in a Jon Kitna Vinny Testaverde type of replacement. Probably not the most prudent strategy, but if we dont take a qb in the 1st round of the next 2 drafts then that is exactly what you will see.

1. How long do you think Romo will play, and why?

1 Maybe 2 years

2. For those of you who do not believe Romo will play out his full contract, do you see his career being cut short by injury, Romo cut due to poor play, see him retiring after winning a super bowl, or some other reason?

what did Manning look like closing in on 40 and he's no Manning

3. Do you think that we will have Romo's successor already on the team when he retires, or will there be a gap between Romo's departure and his successful successor taking over?

yes the should be looking ahead this time

4. Regarding Romo's successor, do you see him being a traditional franchise type of QB (Brady, Manning, Brees, Ben, etc) or do you think we will attempt to fill it with a multi purpose QB (more like Cam)

traditional

5. If you see a gap between Romo and his successor, how long do you see the gap lasting between Romo's departure and us getting meaningful, acceptable QB play after his departure?

probably longer than I am alive

We're mostly in agreement - Romo has a couple years left. Do we have his successor on the roster? Probably not, but I see us trading for a legit FA QB to come in, unless Dak is the guy, and he may be. I don't see Jerry waiting long for a legit starting QB to come along, like after Aikman.

1. Prior to the drafting of EE, two years. Now? Three years.
2. None of the above.
3. Romo's successor? Please. Romo is a HOF level QB, they don't grow on trees.
4. Pocket passer with good mobility and quickness. I hope.
5. Given that they drafted Dak Prescott, it is clear this team has absolutely no clue about drafting QBs. So maybe...ten years?

  1. 3 years
  2. He is always 1 tackle away from season ending injury and nothing beats father time.
  3. No I don't. I believe we draft another contender in next year's draft. If Prescott and the draft pick doesn't work out we roll with Matthew Stafford @ age 31 who gets sick of the lousy Detroit lions.
  4. I beleve we are looking at mobile qbs that can buy time to get out of trouble just like Romo. Not necessarily a guy like Cam or Kapernick. So yes someone similar to Romo or not a statue.
  5. Instant if we go through FA. If our draft picks actually have promise 3 years so I'm looking at a smooth transition. Now will we be competing instantly? Maybe not with a 3rd year QB but I wouldn't count it out. Romo has made me into a believer.

This much is certain. All quarterbacks will want to come here to this offensive line and running game.

Hopefully, there will be a Mark Brunell or Drew Brees in waiting on a roster somewhere that is free to leave.

Ok, so there are 32 teams in the NFL

Can anyone name one team that has a franchise QB starting and under contract at least 2 more years (regardless of age) that also has a franchise QB backing him up?

I ask this because although I agree that in the absolute perfect universe Dallas would have a franchise QB in waiting, it is unbelievably rare given the current situation.

As a diehard Trojan fan, I appreciate you referring to UCLA as a "middle school"

Only 710 days until the 2018 Draft.

Likely will need to "Suck for Rosen" in 2018.

Now it's back to hoping Romo can hold up for these 2 years and hoping a QB slides to us in the 1st. There is actually some good QBs in next year's draft (of course before the season; I like the kid out of MIA, but he will be out of our reach if continues to progress.

I can also see the Titans/CLE not wanting to just move two/three spots but hold out for the bounty so can't really fault the FO w/out knowing the other FOs' (TEN/CLE) intentions, etc. so hard to know if we even inquired about moving up bf STL/PHI. I think JJ tried to get cute by getting Zeke and Lynch but was held back. I don't particularly like Lynch tbh but understood his philosophy (greed).

If it was the number one priority, they would have parted with the third to get Lynch. They are not ready yet.

Yeah, as if finding a QB post-Aikman wasn't a top priority then. It's not that these hacks don't know they need a QB, they just don't know how to find him. See QC, Hutch, Banks, Henson, Stoerner, Wright, etc. It's going to be a long drought........

Huh?

If it's the #1 priority and we liked both of those QBs then why did we allow anyone to move up and get our future?

Why did they have another QB targeted for the late 1st round but scoff at an asking price for the pick that they just recently paid for a DE and was less than what they gave up for a CB?

I am very worried about QB because as of right now the Cowboys are headed toward football hell. Time is running out and we're left to hope terrible talent evaluators in our front office who have never found a QB on their own can quickly find a suitable successor to Romo.

I expect more Dak Prescotts. Complete wastes of space and time.

This is our kinda sorta want a QB phase.

They were never going to take a quarterback at 4... they did what they said all along they were going to do with the #4 pick, and that was draft with the idea that Romo was the starter for the forseeable future. Elliott is pretty much the living embodiment of that idea.
Now they would have loved to get a QB at 26 for sure because of the smaller investment and dirt cheap salary at that spot. Fortunately, someone stepped in and saved Jerry from trading for a basketball player-sized, robo-QB insta-bust.

questions 1 & 2, I think Romo will play at the most 2 more years, I don't think it will be injury that forces his retirement, I have a hunch that Romo is a gun shy Qb at this stage, too many hits, too many injuries, too many surgeries. I think he will retire after 2 more years max.

I can say for sure Moore is not the heir apparent, I have hope for Prescott, but mostly likely the future franchise Qb isn't on the roster.

As for the last question, If we don't have a high enough pick in the next couple of years to get a QB through the draft, I can see us signing bridge gap veterans till we do, ie.. Fitzpatrick, Sanchez, Bradford types

Exactly which is why when they are ready - they are going to sell the farm and they should. It wouldn't make sense to waste the offensive line and skill positions to hope to hit on a QB. So get ready for a potential 2 number ones and 2 number twos type of deal in an upcoming draft. It'll be Jerry's swan song - his last big wildcatter move to show everybody he's still got it in him.

If it's the right player I will gladly take 15 years of a franchise QB and swallow the pill on the drafts. It's just the way it is now, you have to make a move. I always keep going back to the Bills and the amount of talent they have on that team and yet their QB situation prevents them from even making the playoffs.

I am curious how the members here feel the post Romo era will play out in Dallas. Here are a few questions I would like to hear your thoughts on, and please, lets keep it civil and reasonable.

1. How long do you think Romo will play, and why?

thru season age 38 at least. Possibly 1-2 more years. HOF caliber QBs tend to play thru age 38.

2. For those of you who do not believe Romo will play out his full contract, do you see his career being cut short by injury, Romo cut due to poor play, see him retiring after winning a super bowl, or some other reason?

Difficult to say esp injury or after a SB all possibilities.

3. Do you think that we will have Romo's successor already on the team when he retires, or will there be a gap between Romo's departure and his successful successor taking over?

I would like to see a successor here but one plan is to allow for his loss then a season which brings a high pick then go for a successor that way. I don't like that but that is likely the course for Jerry.

4. Regarding Romo's successor, do you see him being a traditional franchise type of QB (Brady, Manning, Brees, Ben, etc) or do you think we will attempt to fill it with a multi purpose QB (more like Cam)

They will grab what they can then use it to the best of his ability. They would like a traditional QB who can run ala Staubach or Young.

5. If you see a gap between Romo and his successor, how long do you see the gap lasting between Romo's departure and us getting meaningful, acceptable QB play after his departure?

Answers 1-2 embedded in quote.

1-4 years to acquire then another 1-2 for you to see some results. Likely another 1-2 years before he matures if that happens.
